Cloning aint just for scientist anymore

January 7, 2012 by rock95seven

I have been busy this new year, building a large desk for my wife and i to use with our computers as well as building a new antenna for Rock 105.3 FM.

I have been busy this new year, building a large desk for my wife and i to use with our computers as well as building a new antenna for Rock 105.3 FM.

I am sure you all have seen the Tru-match TM100 antenna at http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/cgi-bin/commerce.exe?preadd=action&key=TM100 Ramsey electronics, well a ham operator by the name of Mike Yancey cloned that antenna for a mere $17 dollars.

You can see his plans and antenna here: http://www.km5z.us/FM-Transmit-Antenna.php

And of course you can see my nearly finished version of the cloned TM100 at my YouTube Channel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLh2Jujl8nE&feature=share

This antenna project was fun and my wife helped out as well which is why it was so enjoyable to put together.
I will post a video after i put it up in the air showing coverage and the pro’s con’s of the cloned tm-100.

Why do Humming Birds hum?

December 13, 2011 by rock95seven

Because they don’t know the words…..

Yeah that was a terrible joke I know, you know what else is terrible?? Hum on an otherwise clean sounding AM CC signal. I am trying to find the cause.

Yeah that was a terrible joke I know, you know what else is terrible?? Hum on an otherwise clean sounding AM CC signal. I am trying to find the cause.

What i have tried so far: replaced the jumper behind the L + R audio inputs that bypasses grounding through the power supply, tried a different audio cord and different inductor settings.

I was able to reduce the hum but not eliminate it.
The next thing to try i guess is the double extension cords RFB mentioned.
We do not have an extra 220 v outlet here otherwise i would try what Radio8z mentioned. The only 220v lines here are the water heater, stove and clothes dryer.

And i just thought about this, perhaps i should try a different music source as well, since the computer i use for automation is on the same line as the extension cord but on separate outlets.

Signal strength?? Sounds strong here in the house but i have not had a chance to try it outside away from the house. Maybe tomorrow.

Going to try carrier current

December 10, 2011 by rock95seven

Since mounting a 3 meter stick with a ground plane is out of the question in my situation, i believe the best solution for covering more territory is AM CC.

Since mounting a 3 meter stick with a ground plane is out of the question in my situation, i believe the best solution for covering more territory is AM CC.

I will be using the induction method by wrapping wire around an extension cord. The grounding will come from the extra cable outlet in the living room since it is not being used for cable tv.

Just to be clear, am i correct in assuming that wrapping a 10 foot or more piece of wire around coaxial cable and then connecting the coax to the extra cable outlet would not yield any usable signal??? (not to mention the cable company would probably frown on it)

The short piece of household wiring would not be big enough to attach a coil to it. I measured that wire and it came out to 8 1/4 inches.

The transmitter i will be using is the SStran AMT3k though i may attempt to use the ext antenna feature on the Talking House just to see how well it does.

Any thoughts, comments or last rites?? lol I am always open to suggestions. Thanks

Hoisting the un-jolly roger

In another post found here http://www.part15.us/node/3112 about carrier current, i mentioned the flag pole on the front porch. I have used it before as an FM antenna.

In another post found here http://www.part15.us/node/3112 about carrier current, i mentioned the flag pole on the front porch. I have used it before as an FM antenna.

Well for the fun of it i connected it to the Ramsey FM 25B once more, using a piece of RG-6 left over from the old cable runs removed from my home after new lines were installed. It works pretty well, the results aren’t stellar but it is indeed working.

There are several places my signal wont reach using the indoor whip , but the outdoor flag pole antenna fills in most of those dead spots and reduced noise heard usually from reflections caused by all the metal around the park.

I wound 2 turns of the cable in a loop and tied that together with zip ties, a make shift balun.
Now the only question i have is this, what to do with the shield. It was not connected to any ground nor was there a wire attached to it. I just left it bare.

Should i add some wire to the shield as long as the flag pole or leave it alone? Seems to me it would add undesired length to the antenna, but then again it wouldn’t be a dipole without the extra element (wire)?

Any suggestions??

What the Deuce??

What the Deuce??
I play World of Warcraft but seriously i have to ask this question, WHY is this post on a hobby site such as Part15.us when clearly radio has nothing to do with that game?? Not to mention that it is against Blizzard Entertainment Terms of Service to buy gold for use in-game… Someone, throw me a bone here.

I say again, What The Deuce??

It’s 2:33 am here maybe i should go to bed now…lol
