TH Hums and lousy ground

March 31, 2009 by rock95seven

First, I would like to say the TH is truly plug and play so i can see why it’s so appealing to the realty crowd and hobbyist like us.

First, I would like to say the TH is truly plug and play so i can see why it’s so appealing to the realty crowd and hobbyist like us.

Second, I have a slight hum but only when no program (audio) is present and i think it has something to do with ground.

Would the TH 2 still auto tune if i added extra ground from the chassis to a ground screw or ground rod outside?

My range is poor as i have stated in a previous post, but i have it plugged into a surge protector. I think the TH 2 did slightly better when i tested it on the kitchen table plugged directly into a outlet.
Most if not all the outlets in this home have a flat plate that snaps into place so there are no screws on the outlet covers to tap into.

Poor ground as we all know affects range in the bcb, if i can ground this unit i feel the range could be increased slightly.

Another thing:
My trailer has a peaked roof instead of the flat or slightly rounded off roof. So if you are standing inside the home you would look up and see the inside of the peeked roof.
Anyway the antenna cannot be straight up and down (vertical).

It is running up the wall then across the ceiling so it is in a “L” shape.
Not the ideal setup. I have not tried the antenna running horizontal along the wall. Another option i have is moving my desk closer to the window and dropping the wire out the window, although this would only get 8 ‘ of the antenna out the window it would have to be better than having the antenna inside a tin can.

I am just thinking of ways to getting my signal out of the home using what i have at hand. I still plan on using some kind of vertical antenna outside later.

AM 1630 is on the air

The second TH 2 came in today and i have started to experiment with the antenna placement and setting the audio.

The second TH 2 came in today and i have started to experiment with the antenna placement and setting the audio.

First the audio seems a bit flat, mid range and highs are good but bass response is poor.

Second the range is decent although i haven’t really tested past the mobile home park, but in some areas the signal is weak and others the signal is listenable. (using the wire antenna)

In weak areas my car radio is bombarded with static and buzzing wich has nothing to do with the TH2 it’s just environmental noise. Powerlines and Cable TV.

100 feet from my tin can and the signal is great, no static and listenable tone quality. I have to assume this has been said before, the TH2 is more suitable for voice.

At any rate, more experimenting is needed before i put the TH2 in permanent service.

Question talking house tx

March 12, 2009 by rock95seven

I ordered a talking house tx w/o a power adapter.
Can someone with one of these units please tell me what the ratings are for the adapter? Need the voltage, amps and the positive pin position.

New Bill H. R. 1147 passed

New Bill Passed (the Local Community Radio Act of 2009) H. R. 1147

New Bill Passed (the Local Community Radio Act of 2009) H. R. 1147

This will allow more LPFM stations on the air and cancels out the third adjacent channel rule. But i see some good and bad things coming out of all this.

More noise on the already crowded fm band while new lpfm stations small signal fighting to be heard through the iboc hash and bleed over from high powered radio stations.

Without channel guards in place the fm band will be a sea of noise, lpfm stations do not stand a snowballs chance in hell and the same can be said for part 15 fm as well. I don’t think part 15 fm will survive.
AM and shortwave look pretty good to me right now in fact there is a whole bunch of frequencies out there just waiting for experimentation.

I would like your opinions on this new development, maybe i am looking at this all wrong.

i wonder…

March 4, 2009 by rock95seven

Im sure most of you have used 2 way radios with pl tones or Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System (ctcss), most of the bubble pack radios on the market have these tones as added privacy or to tone the squelch on a repeater. My gmrs handhelds have this option and can even be set for groups in case you need to send messages to only certain people, while the other groups will not get the message.
Many users can be on one frequency without interfering with anyone else.

So anyway, what if fm radio stations used this feature?
For example, on 97.7 fm there could be 3 stations in a 20 mile radius sharing this frequency but all three stations will be using different tones, the listener would choose 97.7 fm and press a scan button that would scan for all stations on 97.7 fm, maybe playing a few seconds of that station before moving to the next station.

It would seem like this would work but on the same token, there is the possibility of interference, so power levels would have to be controlled somehow.

It would be great if this would work, think of all the stations that could share the same channel being more efficient and possibly fitting more stations on the fm dial.
Maybe this idea can be used in some of the low vhf bands like 46 to 49 mhz while fitting many more stations on a small slice of spectrum.

Maybe get rid of IBOC too lol yeah right!

Just one of the many crazy ideas rolling around in my head.

I thought someone would be interested in this piece of test gear.
This is not my auction, I just came across this and wanted to share with anyone interested.
