Slogans

I just thought of this. Most of the radio stations of all sizes have their slogan. Noticed I put that in singular tense. Most stations have a slogan.

That’s the main theme of what I just thought. We do we have one, static, unchanging, permanent, same everyday slogan, when in fact radio is an organic medium that can change second by second? Are we trying to stand still? Are we pretending to be a statue?

I think we should have new slogans all the time, anytime we think of a new one or a better one.

My new slogan of the day is “The Passing Scene”

By tomorrow I’ll forget, and I’ll get sick of updating the website every few minutes, but for now, “Worldround Radio” is “The Passing Scene.”

I’ve heard your slogan before. And the time before that. Save it.

Executive Position Offered to DRS2

This afternoon I, Carl Blare, acting lord, recalled how well DRS2 (Dog Radio Studio 2) introduced Low Power Hour No. 38 to the part15.us community. It was a very smooth piece of work.

So I contacted Mr. Dog Radio and asked if he would fulfill the position of official pronouncer for upcoming LPH releases.

While we await Mr. Studio 2’s reply, I can tell you that No. 39 has its flaws.

I ran a test hearing of this new show tonight on the KDX Worldround stream, and noticed several editing errors.

Wouldn’t you know it, my web site service provider notified me that tonight, of all nights, they were shutting down for maintenance. So I can’t get in there to correct the errors.

That means the version with errors is standing right out in the open at kdxradio.com and can’t be corrected until tomorrow. This is Version “V1”.

So for trivia sensitives, like myself, when “V2” appears, the editing errors will be corrected.

Also, V2 may include additional material not found in V1. I don’t know. I already forget what that might be.

Keeping track of life while it goes down the tubes is one struggle, that’s for sure.

The Welcome Station

The members of part15.us have been wonderful in always agreeing that the FCC has jurisdiction over the airways and that the part 15 rules must be honored.

The members of part15.us have been wonderful in always agreeing that the FCC has jurisdiction over the airways and that the part 15 rules must be honored.

Many discussions have considered the possibility of a visit someday by an FCC inspector, which, as we’ve heard, could occur during business hours, in the evening, or over the weekend. Therefore we could be found in an inconvenient position, perhaps having dinner with guests or taking a shower.

Still, I would think we would want to be very accommodating and make the agent feel like we were expecting him all along.

Then I thought, our transmitter/antenna design should take this into account. It should be built in such a way that it will be easily reached for observation.

If it’s outdoors, it should not be in a thorn bush. If indoors it should not be behind a giant bookshelf filled with 4,000 heavy books.

Since our station is building some new outdoor antenna locations, I decided to make them visitor friendly. I hope that doesn’t make it too easy for thieves to grab the equipment…. hmmm.

Anyone else think of such things?

Heat Waves

Human brainwaves are sensitive to heatwaves.

Both types of wave are low power energies which co-exist.

Human brainwaves are sensitive to heatwaves.

Both types of wave are low power energies which co-exist.

Brainwaves are at the ideal when heatwaves are confined to a narrow range between 66-degrees and 88-degrees Fahrenheit.

Heatwaves in the hundreds tend to distort brainwaves in such a way that thoughts are full of noise.

I was thinking that some braintank whiz at FCC might think, “We could plant an agent on the part 15 hobby sites whose job would be to issue plenty of warnings. That might cut down on all these field inspections in the hot sun. Our guy wouldn’t be a whistle-blower, he would be the guy who listened for whistles.”

That thought was like a mirage on the hot pavement.

Antenna Obervation

June 27, 2012 by Carl Blare

Years ago I learned that antennas, transmitting different frequencies that are near each other on the dial, need to be located far apart in physical proximity to avoid the two signals mixing in the antenna through induction.

That’s why 1550kHz is transmitted from the Wintenna (a resonated metal window frame serving outdoors and indoors) on the north end, and 1680kHz is radiated from the Wintenna on the south, opposite end of the building, separated by 36’7″

But that’s not far enough apart, I learned this morning. With 1550kHz already on and transmitting the Alex Jones Show, I turned on 1680kHz and turned the modulation to zero for testing the carrier, but on a radio in a different room a frazzled sounding image from 1550 was clearly audible on the 1680 carrier.

As long as the two transmitters carry the same audio at the same time, this mixing of signals seems to be harmless, but it certainly is an unexpected event at the given distance.

Morning Drive

June 27, 2012 by Carl Blare

There is a little known reason why KDX part 15 radio station does not start broadcasting until 10 in the morning. It does not mean that the DJ is sleeping late.

There is a little known reason why KDX part 15 radio station does not start broadcasting until 10 in the morning. It does not mean that the DJ is sleeping late.

The reason KDX is silent in the early hours is for the peace, tranquility and refreshment of natural silence, following the great restoration of a good night’s sleep.

But the story really begins the night before. We become so ladened and weighed down by the many experiences, thoughts and worries accumulated throughout the day, that we crumble into the “I give up” fetal position of sound asleep, where dreams get busy and rearrange the brain furniture so that we can awake in reset mode, fresh again, ready for reality.

But there’s an ugly trap waiting and cajoling at us named “drive time radio” and if we let it in, it immediately undoes the entire night of dreaming and instantly fills our head with all the chatter and bother that took us down the night before. By 10 AM we would willingly go into foreclosure, leave the kids off with child protective services, release the pets, and abandon the career if only we could take a long, long nap.

Drive time radio is short for drive-me-crazy radio, or, drive-by radio as in drive-by shooting.

Have no part of it. Refuse. Write your representative. Put a stop to it.

If you must transmit in the early hours, play long recordings of the forest or perhaps a gentle brook bubbling just slightly. Dead carrier is good.

One last thing. Disconnect the phone. Make people hang on to their problems until a decent hour.
