From a mere suggestion MRAM 1500 took the notion of a LPFM station from talk to action, signing on with equipment, tower, and programming.
A few days later he had major musical groups appearing live on WCFI.
We are the amazed public blinking wildly in light of this grand success.
Check it out and see how it's done.
Did I mention tonights live IROK Concert is the last of the season and what a show.
Three bands tonight; Jimi Hendrix, Santana and Janis Joplin! Wow, right from my high school days.
You can listen live right here at WCFI 96.1 FM
Show starts at 6pm Eastern.
Well we had a little technical glitch and lost our STL for a few minutes. Seems I try to run to many things at once on this old laptop and of all things the sound card input was locked out. Not good...
A quick McGuiver move, I used my Smart Phone for the link until the laptop finished booting and everything was back online.
Moral: Don't screw with the laptop during the broadcast.
This was the last IROK Concert for the season BUT our Live-Local broadcasts will pick-up the Cuyahoga Falls Black Tigers football home games. The first will be next Friday, September 4th. Game time is 7pm.
We will be broadcasting the home games of which there will be 4. Dates TBA.
I'm sure we'll be live before that so tune in.
Two things, MRAM Bob...
While your present remote audio pickup system is novel and clever, will WCFI be evolving to a more permanent way of doing remote broadcasts which depends less on your careful attendance?
AND, will some live events, like sports games, be available for re-transmission by Part 15 stations?
I'm not aware of any reason why rebroadcast of any of our programs would be a problem. As always the issue of roylaties comes up when music is involved. We will be including the half-time band shows so how would that figure in as for the royalties issue?
When the high school starts doing live broadcasts they will be using their Comrex remote equipment. Very nice stuff and expensive. An all in one codec and mixer with multiple comm capabilities; WIFI, LAN, ISDN, Dial-up. Just plug in your mics and headsets, hookup your choice of comm line and go.
I on the other hand am using the same laptop I use daily at work running TeamSpeak for the STL link over IP be it WIFI or hardwire network and ZaraRadio to play audio files (music and ID's). I have a Behringer 12 input mixer (4 mics, 4 stereo line, 2 stereo aux, 2 tape returns) feeding the laptop audio input.
I tried to upload a picture file of the show taken with my Smart Phone to the laptop using Bluetooth and thats when the soundcard input failed. Just to much for the laptop to handle I guess.
Being a one man show I'll always have to pay attention. It would be nice to have someone handle the switching from local to live remote leaving me to worry only about sending the feed. As it is though, I have to use the laptop to control the transmitter site for switching and such as well as run the show.
I'd like to know if anyone was listening when the show switched to my Smart Phone while the laptop was rebooting. They would have heard about 30 seconds of silence, then the transmitter automatically switched to a backup player. Then, depending on how long it took me to figure out what happened they would have heard the Smart Phone broadcast for a couple minutes.
I guess the boss just has to understand these things happen. But hey, the boss is happy I'm able to make it happen without spending lots of money.
MRAM Bob I like how your instant planning mode kicks in when a routing problem needs solving for program and distribution control. Kind of like watching a virtuoso violinist dash off some Paganini followed by a barn dance.
The half time band portion of sports probably requires relay stations to pay blanket royalty rates that would cover the music, otherwise stations would need to cut-away for their own inserts.
It's a whole new game territory for low power radio.
Bob sounds like you have a driver problem where as the external sound card is interfering with Bluetooth. Plus some Laptops use the same Wifi transmitter/receiver for Bluetooth. Don't know why this is but I read about this somewhere. Bluetooth uses 2.4Ghz and so does WiFi. Best thing to do would be to either use an external Bluetooth dongle and try that if nothing else.
The laptop sound card is internal. The WIFI was not being used rather I had a LAN drop to plug into.
It was strange. The sound card output was working, only the input quit.
As for the Bluetooth, I tried it this morning at the shop while not on a remote op. The laptop never saw my Smart Phone attempts to connect. Again not using WIFI so I don't know if it was a coincedence that the audio input quit that night while trying to transfer using Bluetooth.
Do you have the latest chipset drivers? You may want to Download a free program called Slim Drivers. It will allow you to check all the drivers for your system. I know I had to update my control drivers. This can create crash issues if the HDD controler is outdated. Plus make sue the HDD is not sticking. If the crash happens during file transfers that could be the case. Is your HDD SATA because there was a problem with Windows 7 with SATA's for a while. After the paches were Downloaded that issue did seem to go away.
The laptop is City Issue, maintained by our I.T. department. The laptop itself runs a driver check periodically and seems to stay updated.
The thing is that nothing else was affected, only the audio input. Other apps running were fine.
I will see if I can duplicate the problem under controlled circumstance and see what happens.
Thanks for the suggestions.
