Testing Testing 123

August 29, 2016 by rock95seven

Ok So I finally got the sound card to work for me and have started a rather scrambled up playlist which has no real direction to it other than just testing the streaming capabilities of the Icecast2 server and mp3 payer, in this case VLC player.

I chose VLC just to test the streaming server, later I will work on installing Zararadio and Windows media player, hopefully.

Could i get members to try to tune into the stream? You can find it on http://thefreeproject.no-ip.org:8000 or just leave off the :8000 of that url and click on the button that is labled Radio and it will take you to the Icecast2 page, find the m3u link on the top right of the page. That should open your favorite player.

Let me know how it works for you.

Thanks

Home Webhosting Revisited

August 27, 2016 by rock95seven

Most of you know i have had some trouble with Windows 7 Home Premium, the same machine running my webserver suffered a minor set back that took nearly 2 1/2 days to fix. Most of that time was spent trying to track down blank DVD-RW’s to back up all of my files, i never found those so i was stuck using a 16 GB thumbdrive to slowly transfer files from the hard drive to another computer for temporary storage.

The computer i was running the webserver and Blue Bucket Radio on has a 1 TB hard drive, thankfully i had not used the whole hard drive and my other computer with a 320 GB hard drive had plenty of room to store those files.

I was not able to save Windows 7 and would end up re-formatting the 1 TB hard drive and re-installing an operating system,
i did all this using a live bootable thumbdrive with Ubuntu 13.04 installed on it. It’s pretty easy, go into BIOS settings and change the boot order from hard drive to usb thumbdrive, save changes in BIOS and restart the machine.

When it boots up Linux Ubuntu loads as if the thumbdrive is a hardrive and from there i was able to access all the important files in the broken windows system for transfer to another storage media, in this case the 16 GB thumbdrive.

After all of that transferrerering i decided to try to fix Windows once more but alas it was not meant to be and i fell back on my favorite Linux operating system. As my wife said, she would never go back to Windows unless she really had to.

Her Toshiba laptop runs Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and has been doing so for a couple years now faithfully, it sports quad core processors where as my HP Pavilion runs Dual Processors, both are amazingly fast and reliable.

The webserver is back up and running under Apache2 and Webmin, the url is the same as before and is in my signature below all my post’s. I have included screenshots below for this post showing the server GUI Webmin, the Icecast2 server, the desktop and the About This Computer page showing basic specs on this pc.

If you all don’t mind, could you visit the improved website and let me know if you can access the website, how quick it is to load and if you think it needs improvements share your thoughts as well? I really would appreciate the feedback.

Home Webhosting

June 20, 2016 by rock95seven

After missing nearly all of the ALPB meeting but hearing just enough to get an idea in my head, i have installed and have running a website from home on a fairly beefy HP Pavilion Desktop PC.

I am still working on the web pages but the main page (index.html) is nearly finished.
This is an experiment at this point and i really don’t know if it will stay online for a long time or just go away in a few weeks. We will just have to see what happens.

Here is the url: http://thefreeproject.no-ip.org

Members please try it out and let me know how it works for you, good and bad comments welcomed. Thanks

Official Weather Spotters

May 21, 2016 by rock95seven

Thanks to the great people at WYMT-TV and NOAA from the Jackson Weather office for providing this great service for our community.

Stephanie, myself and a handful of people turned up at the back of the WYMT-TV station to learn how to spot tornado’s and how to report them to NOAA and the television station.  We were given a quiz afterwards and a bunch of phone numbers, email address of weather anchors and NOAA Weather Radio.

Of course there was some paper work to sign but nothing to long drawn out.
We received our certificates and some tokens to take home with us, after the important stuff was out of the way, we took a tour of the station and returned to the sports studio to watch a movie and eat lunch.

All in all it was a great experience.
I have some photos to share because for some reason my tremors were really acting up today which made my videos suffer. I took screenshots off of the video to share here.

The staff was great and we had a lot of fun, Stephanie and I are now certifed weather spotters for Perry County, Kentucky.

Weather Spotter Class

May 21, 2016 by rock95seven

As i mentioned in an entry 2 blogs back, Stephanie and I are going to a Weather Spotter class put on for free by WYMT-TV and the N.O.A.A. weather staff from Jackson ,Ky.

Our county is in dire need of weather spotters, weather spotters aren’t the same as storm chasers. Although i would not be opposed if offered a job as a storm chaser, storms really don’t bother me so and i have enough sense to find shelter when things get out of control.

This class will teach us how to spot potentially dangerous weather conditions that could lead to flash floods, damaging winds and tornados as well as how to predict the best time to share that data in real time with NOAA weather radio and the media.

This class is for two hours and i hear there is a rumor of a cook out afterwards, we go at 9 am tomorrow morning. I am excited to say the least, weather is  another one of my hobbies. And who knows, maybe i can work out some kind of deal where i can carry WYMT-TV weather on Blue Bucket Radio.

I will be taking a recorder with me, actually it’s an app on my old Android phone called voice recorder, the same app we recorded the Storm episode of The Little Things Radio show when our power was out for a week.

If all goes well i will share audio snippets from what i record, there will be some videos for us to watch so i probably wont be recording those.

I’ll let you all know.
