Know Your Ground

November 26, 2012 by Carl Blare

For a long time there have been plans to establish an outdoor antenna site with radials, but the clearing of yard space is going slowly, but steadily.

For a long time there have been plans to establish an outdoor antenna site with radials, but the clearing of yard space is going slowly, but steadily.

One final clearance issue will be filing for a digging permit to allow safe planting of a ground rod, but prior to that time I wish to explore the ground with a metal detector.

Tell me your metal detector experiences.

Radio Shack has an astounding variety in their online catalog, ranging from around $40 to over $200. Is there really a difference in performance among so many models, or are they more or less alike.

Programs From ALPB

One of the growing number of services being planned by the Association of Low Power Broadcasters (ALPB) is a radio program distribution system to link stations with a choice of programming.

One of the growing number of services being planned by the Association of Low Power Broadcasters (ALPB) is a radio program distribution system to link stations with a choice of programming.

Worldround Radio (KDX1) has opened a new 10-minute program called “Blare OnAir Lite”, scheduled for 7-day-a-week production, and serving two purposes…

One use might be a daily program feature on some stations, the other use being a 10-minute filler program which our own experience has found to be useful for open spaces in the schedule.

The first two programs are posted and available for use, and we will appreciate feedback from stations who use the show, and will publish an affiliates list for all stations who schedule the program.

Captive Audiences

November 23, 2012 by Carl Blare

Part 15 radio stations have a history of seeking the captive audience.

Part 15 radio stations have a history of seeking the captive audience.

MICRO1700 recalled Radio Collinsville, a station on a pickup-truck that set up shop at a rest stop where his audience happened along on their travels.

Two stations have positioned themselves to serve idling drivers waiting for ferry boats at Friday Harbor, Washington and Tybee Island, Georgia.

Now we have a national epidemic of overnight campouts in mall parking lots prior to Black Friday, and we must rise to provide part 15 service to relieve the boredom and excite the experience with commercial messages paid for by the surrounding merchants. If you play it right this one event could fund the station for a whole year.

Big Ideas of Western Man.

Old Theme Replay

November 22, 2012 by Carl Blare

In 2007 when I was scrambling around starting a part 15 station I also ordered some N-scale model railroad products which remain uninstalled.

In 2007 when I was scrambling around starting a part 15 station I also ordered some N-scale model railroad products which remain uninstalled.

But while I was giving trains some thought, I realized that part 15 radio and model trains are an exact match.

Many train hobbyists build whole mini-cities that take up entire basements or garages, and imagine having scale-model towers and actual frequency allocation where, let’s call it N-Town, is served by 6 AM stations and 3 FM stations.

In the model train catalogs I actually found a radio-tower-with-shack replica, which I still intend to buy so it can become a useless object underfoot.

Finally, if we could reduce grocery shopping to the miniature level there would be no need for full sized cars.
