But while I was giving trains some thought, I realized that part 15 radio and model trains are an exact match.
Many train hobbyists build whole mini-cities that take up entire basements or garages, and imagine having scale-model towers and actual frequency allocation where, let’s call it N-Town, is served by 6 AM stations and 3 FM stations.
In the model train catalogs I actually found a radio-tower-with-shack replica, which I still intend to buy so it can become a useless object underfoot.
Finally, if we could reduce grocery shopping to the miniature level there would be no need for full sized cars.

Funny you should mention that, I was just looking at them last night!
A man I worked many years for (Nick Alexander, he’ll be 91 next month), wanted a train set to go around a small Christmas tree and I helped him find one on ebay, and installed it to a rounded sheet of painted plywood and added scenery and stuff.
Anyway a few days ago he asked me to come set it up for him again sometime this month..
Well, last night with radio on the mind I was looking for a few additions to add to the train set – including a radio tower!

Little Cities

I have a fellow model train enthusiast who took one of those old football games that had the motor and cam and figures and placed that in his little model train city. Every Friday night while playing with the model train and little city, there was a local football game going on with play by play action fed through a small speaker array system so the whole entire little city would hear the game.
Was quite fascinating to watch..and hear. Actual sound clips from NFL games too.

My brother is a model railroad guy. He used to construct
a wonderful set-up in my parent’s basement every
Christmas time.
I had another friend who actually set up a whole
model railroad in his – get this -STORAGE AREA of
his apartment building. When he really wanted to
get away from things, he would go down into his
storage area and run the trains. His storage area
was the kind that you could lock up. Even though
the set-up was visible through the front screen
door of the storage room, nobody ever tried to
break in and steal or wreak anything.
I alway envisioned a little building in one of these
set-ups that was THE radio station of the past.
You know, a little house type thing with a callsign
and frequency painted on the front. (And a little
white and red lit broadcast tower in the back yard.)
Such as – I’m making this up – “WSXF 1240, Kunkletown, CT,
500 watts day only.”
Something like that. And parked next to the building would
be a little station wagon that said, “THE BIG 1240” on
the side.
Cooler than cool.
