Plenty of Noise

April 11, 2011 by Carl Blare

This morning the AM noise across the dial is fierce. At first I thought it resembled HD digital hash, but then I began wondering whether the nuclear radiation being continuously released in the world might cause radio static (?)

Then I remembered that somewhere I think I heard that radio static increases prior to an earthquake.

Later I’ll check shortwave and other bands and file a report.

How are things in your location?

The Reason

April 10, 2011 by Carl Blare

The reason new threads start about subjects that have been discussed before is that the internet can’t find the original thread where we remember reading something. The average person will go back a month or two scrolling around until patience runs out and we just start over.

That’s why I’m asking about ground radial length vs. 3-meter vertical, which I know has been discussed very distinctly.

Point is, with a 3-meter AM antenna, beyond what length is a radial installation pointless or even counter productive?

I’ll even add another observation. If we didn’t repeat and repeat, this website would stop because it’s all been said.

Life could easily be considered superfluous for a similar reason, but that belongs on a philosophy website.

Part 15 Magnified

April 7, 2011 by Carl Blare

It takes 10 part 15 transmitters to generate 1-watt.
10,000 part 15 transmitters to produce 1kW.
500,000 of the devices to make 50kW.

Network Dream

April 3, 2011 by Carl Blare

Why daydream alone when you can put everyone at part15.us into it which may bring inputs or put downs that would never occur in a private dream.

Why daydream alone when you can put everyone at part15.us into it which may bring inputs or put downs that would never occur in a private dream.

It’s about starting a radio network. Right now we have AM, FM shortwave and streaming, but a network would supply programming to a national affiliation of low power stations, with “time-out” periods for local commercials and announcements.

Trouble is, a lot of the programming we have permission to carry is restricted to non-commercial use and may not extend to other stations unless further permission was acquired. Ya, but we have a lot of programs in the public domain, although other stations could download that same material and wouldn’t need our network.

That about takes care of that. End of dream.

Ground Trial Begun

April 2, 2011 by Carl Blare

The objective of this trial is to cover the entire yard from front to back at 1550kHz, an uphill stretch all the way. Transmitting downhill from an vertical antenna always works but getting uphill to the rear has never happened.

The idea is to run a single buried ground wire from the building up to the top of the hill on the theory that doing so will usher the signal up all the way.

By sundown tonight the wire was laid to the half-way mark, and after it had been dark awhile, I walked out there with a portable and the signal was solid right to the half-way mark where the wire ended. Previously, before the ground wire was installed, the signal would have been dead by that point, so the indication is that my idea is working. Interestingly, the signal does not go at all beyond the end of the ground wire, put is strong along its sides.

Tomorrow the rest of the test.
