Using Scosche Transmitter for Setting sstran 3000

May 3, 2011 by Carl Blare

With new grounding installed I took a CCrane Radio Plus 150-feet away tuned to 1680kHz. The audio-line fed into Scosche FMT4R and sent the signal at 87.7 FM.

Indoors, Sangeon ATS505, located right by the SStran3000, was tuned to 87.7 FM.

Audio level counterclockwise on SStran so only carrier and background noise was heard. Adjusted C5 for quietest signal.

Leaky Cable Recruitment

The Low Power Hour is looking ahead to future program topics, and would very much like to do a program on leaky-cable broadcasting under the Part 15 rules.

It would be best to have a guest who has already had experience with it and has actually put it into practice and, best of all, presently operates a leaky-cable station.

As long as I’m looking for input, I would also like to do a program about the importance of grounding and discuss all the complexities of that subject, such as the difference between a transmission ground and a safety ground.

All ideas welcome.

Helical Antenna Alert

April 20, 2011 by Carl Blare

Yes, there’s a really strong string about helical antennas somewhere, but I can’t find it. So here’s what I am excited about adding.

Yes, there’s a really strong string about helical antennas somewhere, but I can’t find it. So here’s what I am excited about adding.

In TV Technology (tvtechnology.com), Apr. 11 edition, Page 12, there’s a very informative article by Steve Harvey titled WIRELESS MICS ADJUST TO THE NEW RF ENVIRONMENT. The wireless mic aspect is, of course, interesting as a Part 15 subject, but right now I am talking about a photograph showing double-length helical antennas inside transparent tubes with the open end of the tubes pointed toward the wireless receivers, and the back end attached to mic-stands.

THE SIGNAL IS SHOOTING OUT OF THE END OF THE TUBE.

These antennas are described as highly directional helical antennas, which offer the most forward gain and the tightest polar pattern.

In discussions of helical antennae for Part 15, it has been assumed that radiation will be toward the horizon from all sides of a vertical spiral, but now I’m not so sure. If the example in the article is a firm indication, the signal shoots out the top or “far end” of the helix.

It doesn’t matter that we’re using lower frequencies because the antenna sizes we are forced to use are more suited for HF.

I wanted to link the photo, but on the tv tech website the electronic edition only allows up to page 10 and then requires subscription. As a veteran tv producer I have a complementary subscription, and so could you, by filling out their form. Just say “presto” and start a video division for your station.

My scanner is not up right now, so, no picture.

Strange Neighborhoods

April 13, 2011 by Carl Blare

Over the years growing up in a big city there was always talk of “strange neighborhoods” where “bad things could happen,” even though I always ignored that fear and never had a problem in any neighborhood. But lately the internet has become a “strange neighborhood.”

I already shared the peculiar e-mail I got from Abdul asking me to help improve his 20-watt FM for which he offered to pay 1-hour of my time. Now I get another odd e-mail.

Someone claiming to be a “tutor in Delaware” who is teaching students about ham radio spoke praise of my Part 15 page at kdxradio.com. The tutor asked me to make a link to a find-a-date website where you could meet “people with ham radios.” They said this would increase the confidence of a 7th grade girl who found the link.

It may only be nuclear radiation, but I feel sick.
