So I was listening to the Low Power Hour
#26. I didn't really have time for it all
right away. I got the stream on the
computer, and put a micro cassette recorder
next to the speaker. I pressed record,
and let it go. This is easy for me, even
though it's HORRIBLY LOW TECH. But I didn't
have to fool around with a bunch of
computer commands that are hard to see.
I was leaving job #2 - the day job.
I got on the bus. I had a back pack filled
with stuff. I didn't realize that the
micro cassette recorder was even in the pack.
The bus came to the stop where I was getting
off. i shifted my weight to get up. Suddenly
I heard Road Hog Moran saying, "Mighty Fine,
Mighty Fine." His voice was coming out of
my back pack, somewhere, deep down inside.
I really didn't have time to open the pack
and take everything out in the middle of the
crowded street. It was pretty noisy anyway,
so I just let it keep going.
By the time I got into the drug store to get
a prescription, that lady was singing her
song along with the piano player. Her off
key voice made the pharmacist laugh. I
explained to him that it was a taped radio
show from a friend, and I was in too much
of a hurry to search down in the bag and
turn it off. He got a kick out of that.
I know him pretty well anyway, and we
joke around a lot.
By the time I got into the hardware store
to buy a new broom, there was this goofy
drumming/tap dancing kind of thing going
on. The hardware store was fairly empty
and dead quiet. I bought my broom and
paid for it. The guy behind the counter
looked perplexed, as it he was trying to
figure out where the tap dancing(?) was
coming from. My back pack was behind me,
so it wasn't obvious where the sound was.
Then I stepped out of the hardware store,
and suddenly the music stopped. I guess
the "Off" button must have gotten pressed
on the little recorder. In my remaining
walk home, all was silent.
So Carl, KDX radio had a few listeners in
down town West Hartford, Connecticut, even
if they didn't know it. (I may have the
events slightly out of order, but no matter.)
That's one way to get an audience. What a goofy
chain of events!
Best Wishes,

Turn it on, turn it up, let others hear it, it will peak interest and if they hear where they can find it, they too will tune in.

I don't know if you are referring to
the old "Big Ear," from Radio Shack.
It was a parabolic mike on a tripod
stand made by Radio Shack in the late
1960s. It sort of looked like a
microwave dish, but it was plastic
and painted orange.
Mine didn't work very well. But we
put it outside my friend's house and
ran the audio down to his stereo
system. I think we could hear people
talking a couple hundred feet away,
but I'm not sure. Maybe they were
yelling. This was with the stereo
turned way way up. When a car came
down the street - we had to turn the
stereo down, or we would get literally
blasted by the sound.

P.S. OOPs - you said "By Ear," not
"Big Ear." Oh well. It's a good
blast from the past anyway.
