it has something wrong with it. i have manual with schematic. since it's tube i don't want to mess with trying to repair it. if one of the tubes is bad i don't have the $$$ for new tubes. one of the caps was smoking when i turned it on. i'm just not interested in screwing with it to get it going. again its type certified and this could be a minor fix. i also have a spare tube for it. this is radioboys old transmitter. $300.00 shipped conus with spare tube and manual.

or i will trade to a inovonics 222 or 235 nrsc limiter and a symmetrics 421 leveler.

i need decent processing for my hamilton.

i might do a combo deal with the gittings and give you a good price shipped on both lots.

pics here...

Deals like mine don't come around very often, do they Robert? It took me a week to get the guy to respond to my emails, I had given up and then he finally replied. I'm really stoked about the purchase, and I'm gonna put it to good use. 🙂

no those deals don't. i'm sure you are well aware of the quality construction of these as well. simple but built tough. i don't believe i have every heard of one of these having issues. i'm the only one i know of, but a nearby strike will give anything issues tube or solid state. it wasn't direct i'm sure or this thing would be a burnt piece of toast lol

"Deals like mine don't come around very often"

Deals like that tend to make me very nervous in regards to what is not being disclosed about what is being purchased at such a ridiculous low price.

Last TX 2-20 unit I saw go on ebay went for over 300 bucks. I am assuming your deal was not a listing on ebay, for if it was, that unit would have disappeared off that site in less than a nanosecond at that price!

Just recently there was a TX-30P unit up for sale. The starting bid...425 bucks, with a buy it now for 525. The listing went for 6 days and no one bid. Then it was listed again with a starting bid of 200. The auction went for a scheduled 6 hour run and by the time it was done, the thing sold for over 430.

I have seen burnt up units ran into the dirt and abused sell for far more than 20 bucks on ebay, even units for repair or for parts.

So if you got one at 20 bucks, you did good. Chances are, the seller simply had no idea what the heck they had and how much they could have sold it for. You got lucky..incredibly lucky.

As to the big beast unit up for sale in this thread. A very nice and very large vintage unit. It will make someone a nice piece of gear to add to the collection.

i've been reading over the manual in hopes of figuring out whats wrong with it and considering ordering a round of new tubes and capacitors and then scrapping the pll out of my gittings transmitter to use in place of the crystal.

From the look of it in the photos, appears to be in great shape with the exception of the things you noted. It may be that it merely needs a shotgun of fresh caps and tubes and will run like new. The PLL idea is a good one and shouldn't be difficult to adapt.

The most noted feature I see are the two modulation input choices. Very convenient! And would make adapting C-QUAM to it even more easy.

Robert, it probably just needs new caps, those tubes are pretty tough. When I got the the LPB from UPS this week, I was even happier RFB, its clean as the day it was built! I got it from the Canadian version of Craigslist, total cost including shipping was $100. I saw the one on eBay too, even spoke with the guy on the phone, it went too high for my budget in this economy.. I'm installing the CC station today, wish me luck!

PS: with my TX2 came a nice 9 page FAX from LPB dated 1989, that has all kinds of testing info, voltages, & notes!

Hey, it's Alan (radioboy), the original owner of the Cunningham transmitter.

James Cunningham himself built the tx in 2003. It went on the air in Tallahassee, FL on July 27 of that year on 1160 kHz. I ran the station as a daytimer on 1160 for just under two years.

A Florida thunderstorm caused the damage to the tx. It wasn't a direct hit; rather, a tree on our 17 acres was hit.

At that time, my wife was facing knee replacement surgery and since I didn't have the funds or time to deal with it, I ended up making a deal with Robert. Hated to get rid of it, but..

I've since used a Rangemaster (2007 to 2010) and have had the AM off air for about a year. I'd like to get back on the air with an i AM unit with a range extender. I've got a new radio building now and am about ready to get rolling again.

I've streamed the entire time, and the stream carries basically the same programming as the AM station.

Probably needs recapping - one of them was smoking right after the lightning strike. One of the tubes kept blowing, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one it was. Fair Radio Sales is one place I used to buy spares.

I will tell you - that tx sounded good on the air! Hope you are able to do something with it.

yes that little black cap was smoking. would be nice to know which tube kept blowing and whether this was turned up beyond the 36 watts. being turned up too high according to manual will cause pre mature failure of tubes. whatever became of the gitting tx you got from me in trade for cunningham?
