Antenna placement: trees = bad?

Hi all:

I am in the final stages of constructing the SSTRAN base-loaded antenna. Do I need to be overly concerned about trees around the antenna when I decide on its location?

Regards,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I don't know about this regarding the SSTRAN antenna (mine's not up yet), but I do know for amateur radio it doesn't matter. My present antennna is a thing called a coxial-colinear. It is in the trees in the woods behind my house, supported by and surrounded by trees. I have worked the world with this thing. My radio can tune a tin can (Drake TR-3...hams laughing very much at this point...vacuum tubes, I love them. Put a bag of cashews on the TX, munch them warm, and QSO and life is good) so it may not be a fair comparison with your antenna which I understand has very sharp resonance.

Amateurs on field day contests and in emergencies use trees as antenna supports (bow and arrow and string to erect) with excellent results. My group won the FD contest in Ohio doing this.

I cannot place my SSTRAN design antenna away from trees since I live in a woods so I will watch for what others say about this. I also wonder what happens to the tuning when it rains or snows.

BTW glad you got the pipe slotted and I also discovered it was easier to push the pipe in from the bottom.

Neil

My house, a manufactured home with grid of steel framework 80' x 28 foot under it doesnt effect my signal alot and my antenna is about 18 feet from my antena and is higher than the antenna.. It may effect my signal a little bit.. but its not a massive diffrence. on the clear side vs the side, with the house in between the reciever and mast.
