Technical Problems

June 3, 2013 by admin 2 Comments

Hi Everyone, just a quick note to let you know that the server suffered a huge glitch last night – still trying to get a straight answer on exactly what the cause was – and we were down for about 3 hours. Not only that, some data was corrupted and I had to roll back to June 1 at 6pm so we lost an entire days worth of posts/comments.

First my apologies to anyone that was trying to login and to those whose posts are now gone – the host is a good web host and is paid a lot to do a better job than this so I will be looking into it in great detail.

Second, let me know if you notice anything else that is not quite right so I can make sure everything is working properly now.

regards,

Jon Paul

Part15 Layout Fluctuation

February 24, 2013 by jpjanze 13 Comments

Just a quick note to let everyone know that they aren’t ‘crazy’ if it seems like where things are keeps changing! I am moving things around periodically right now – the layout is still in flux for hte new site – it will settle soon, but we aren’t done yet.

The changes are trying to find the ‘right’ place to add things back in that were here before, without cluttering things up again – trying to balance keeping things clean with functional.

Let me know if there is something you are missing and I will make it a priority to get it ‘back’

(ALSO – organizing some old posts so they are appearing as ‘recent’ sorry about that – doesn’t seem to be anyway around it unfortunately)

Cheers!

Changes to part15.us

February 7, 2013 by admin 15 Comments

Hi Everyone, just a quick note to let you all know that I have been hard at work with a few updates for part15.us and we will be rolling them out over the next few days.

The first of which is a new look and new logo! (see screenshot below to get an idea – I hope you like it!) It will take a couple days after rolling it out for things to settle down (it will take some tweaking).

I am letting everyone know ahead of time, because some of the things you use everyday here may move.

  1. login / logout will likely end up at the top right of the screen
  2. navigation may end up on the right hand side of the screen

I say ‘may’ because I won’t know for certain until it rolls out and see how easily the changes integrate.

The other thing you will notice with the update is that the site should be fully responsive and have excellent view characteristics from any browser or device. Now – keep in mind that just like the infrastructure update, their may be some gotchas, but I am hoping that they will be negligible this time!

Oh, one more thing, we should not run into the system outages anymore that have cropped up over the last week or two. I now know that they were innocent outages and caused by regular old server resource limits which has been rectified.

Cheers! Jon Paul

Jan 6 Update: Forum Changes and System Upgrade Status

November 17, 2012 by jpjanze 16 Comments

Sunday Jan 6 – Hi All, just a quick note to say that I think we have all the bugs worked out of the upgrade (please let me know if something isn’t working as expected or if anything peculiar is still happening) so now we can move on to other changes to improve the site.

The first of those changes some of you have probably noticed and that is that the forums now have categories for : transmitters, antennas, broadcast equipment, media / content, rules / regulations etc. Over time, I will move the ‘old’ topics into the appropriate categories, but please begin using them right away – I know topics can cross the line between topics so don’t sweat it too much, just do your best to pick an appropriate category.

cheers!

Saturday Dec 29, There are a few lingering problems with the upgrade (some reports of being unable to comment, or getting 503 service unavailable errors) – I appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the remaining issues. It appears to be a problem in the anti-spam module (which is working well at blocking the spam, but is also causing stability issues).

Again, thanks for your patience – we are almost done 🙂

Friday Dec 21 – update: Well, it has not been as smooth as I would have wanted, but I think it has been a succesful upgrade. There are still a few nagging things to fix but nothing that affects actual ‘use’ of the forum.

1) resizing to work on a mobile device is the remaining thing I want to get fixed before making any other changes.

Thanks everyone for your patience!

Cheers!

Sunday Dec 16 7PM PST – well, it seems that no matter how many test upgrades I did – the ‘proper’ upgrade wasn’t going to go easily! I apologise to all but hte upgrade has definitely taken longer than expected and caused MANY headaches. It is MOSTLY done now, but not entirely, you SHOULD be able to get in and read / post to the forums etc and just presentation stuff will change (I hope).

Again, I will create another post shortly and please reply with anything you find that doesn’t work properly.

Cheers!
Jon Paul

Sunday Dec 16 – Upgrade is going to happen today. The site will be offline for about an hour starting at 3pm PST. Hang in there everyone!

Almost done! Just a quick heads up that the test upgrades on the Beta site have gone very well and barring any unforeseen mishaps, I will upgrade the main site tomorrow (Sunday, Dec 16). If you notice something NOT WORKING, please POST a REPLY to this thread so I can keep a log and make sure I fix everything.

Cheers!

Part One is now complete – a successful update to the version we are currently running (some of you might have noticed that things got a little wonky a day or two ago and it lasted about a half an hour) there were a couple glitches, but over all was mostly not painful.

I will be updating the beta site later today to practice the major upgrade again and then hopefully we can get through it this weekend.

Cheers!
Jon Paul

Hi Part15ers – after the successful email system upgrade last week – it is now time to complete the major system upgrade (we are upgrading from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 – it makes maintenance easier and provides a better platform for making changes and adding new features).

I will be testing the upgrade here http://beta1.part15.us/ (there is already an upgraded version of the site located there, but it will be up and down a few times as we practice the upgrade a few times so the transition on our public site will be as smooth as possible)

After the upgrade it is likely that SOME THINGS WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY – please be patient, this is a major upgrade and it is likely that some things will break, just keep letting me know if something doesn’t work properly and I will fix it 🙂

I am aiming to do the upgrade at the end of next week (the 22nd, 23rd or 24th) – I am not certain of the exact date yet, it is dependant on how well the practice upgrades go – but will let everyone know when we are closer to the date.

The upgrade itself shouldn’t take too long, perhaps an hour more or less, during which time the site will be unavailable. Again, I will let everyone know closer to the date what time the upgrade will take place.

Any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! And if there is new functionality you would like to see, let me know!

Cheers!

UPDATE: Email System change

November 7, 2012 by jpjanze Leave a Comment

****UPDATE Nov 16. I have finally got the email change sorted out as of this morning so let me know if anything ‘not normal’ happens regarding email send FROM the site.

****UPDATE Nov 16. I have finally got the email change sorted out as of this morning so let me know if anything ‘not normal’ happens regarding email send FROM the site.

I am making a minor change to the way email is SENT from the part15.us website – if all goes according to plan, then no-one will notice the change 🙂 however as many things don’t go according to plan, I wanted everyone to know in advance.

I will make the switch later today, if anyone notices that they are NOT getting email from part15.us, please let me know right away by emailing me directly (not through the website) at jpjanze @ part15.us.

Cheers!

A new look!

March 23, 2011 by madmage 4 Comments

HI! We’ve decided to go with a new layout! Feedback is always welcome!

In the wake of some of the site display issues lately, we’ve decided to migrate to a new layout. Please feel free to leave feedback if you encounter any display issues! We’re eager to hear about it!

Obviously there are a lot of problems on the site and there are a lot of issues needing to be fixed, or tweaked, or replaced, but rest assured, we’re on it, and YOUR feedback can help us fix the issues. Thanks in advance, all!
