Part 15 Wish Lists for 2012

January 1, 2012 by Carl Blare

The first really great wish list was already launched by kc8gpd, with plenty of suggestions for upgrading the existing FCC regs for AM & FM. Here’s the link to that:

Made It To 2012

January 1, 2012 by Carl Blare

If you are reading this note you have made it to 2012. Welcome. Sorry we all forgot to have up to date calendars. I found a printable 1-page 2012 calendar on the internet which will get things started:

http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2012

With KDX set to run automatically all night, we retired New Years Eve at 11 PM Central Time U.S. but at midnight heard an unusually widespread and intensive burst of fireworks and explosions that went on for an amazingly long time. I wish we’d recorded it, but then again, what for?

At 3 AM an intense wind storm started howling at about 44 MPH and tree branches were heard thumping down all around. There is a giant oak tree standing over the KDX building, so we stood vigil near an escape door in case the entire tree crushed the building.

All this time the KDX internet connection remained steady but we wondered whether to shut down for equipment safety.

When the sun came up at 7 AM we decided that whatever hadn’t fallen by now probably wouldn’t fall this year, so we returned to dreamland.

The wind is still coming and going but is less forceful.

Please report the year opening status at your part 15 station…(?)

Suspicion and Belief

December 25, 2011 by Carl Blare

For a long time I have suspected that some radio stations use their daytime power at night ON PURPOSE.

For a long time I have suspected that some radio stations use their daytime power at night ON PURPOSE.

I am very familiar with the upper end of the AM band because I spent months searching for the most open frequencies before starting my own part 15 station.

After sunset many of the top-of-band stations disappear as they switch from 10kW down to 60-Watts or whatever their low nighttime power happens to be. But sometimes certain stations do not disappear, and continue being heard very clearly. It has tended to be Friday night and the program is always live sports.

Start watching for this.

Radio Treat

December 25, 2011 by Carl Blare

The free radio program MEDIA NETWORK PLUS from PCJ Media is a special fun edition, containing shortwave bloopers, a dual between Glen Houser and the announcer at Radio Havana, announcers who had too much to drink last night, and a call to Harold Camping’s Family Radio.

Really fun.

Radio Systems

December 23, 2011 by Carl Blare

The company named “Radio Systems” refer to themselves as “The primary supplier of carrier current equipment,” which suggests that there are other suppliers of carrier current equipment. But no other suppliers of carrier current equipment are known, unless you can mention another supplier.

Radio Systems has only one choice, the TR-6000 30-Watt transmitter and the CP-15 20-Watt coupler, not exactly matched as to power, and not capable of the maximum 50-Watts permitted by Part 15 rules.

And here’s a question about a theoretical carrier current operation that “really travels a long distance” under ideal power line conditions. In such a case, how can the actual transmitting location of the radio station be tracked and found?

If some carrier current stations are able to cover large areas, why don’t we see more carrier current radio stations in operation?
