So, I'm changing my format to basic oldies again, with some classical music (If It Ain't Baroque) and historical jazz (Roaring Twenties & All That Jazz - 30's to 50's). At least for now.
I'm also putting a new focus on the Teenage Dreams shows. I've got a bunch that just need recording, including a follow-on to an early one, Dance Crazes. This time, we're focusing on the early to mid 1960s, and I've found some interesting ones. For example, did you know that one of the crazes was something called the Batusi, that arose from an improvised scene in the first episode of the classic Batman 1966 TV series?
It appears that there were new dance fads every few weeks back then, but we'll just be covering the most popular.
Unfortunately, we're not going to be streaming any more for copyright reasons. I might restart the SDR server, but we'll see.
So now just over the air?
Hmmm...just wondering, does the switch to copyrighted music from Public domain and streaming have something to do with missing being able to program what you want and like? As for that inquiry I made with Socan I never heard from them! I left my email, phone number with the person that took my information. So there's your answer for needing the music license over the air. And this was back in February I called...?
I have 50 + 1 or 2 of Teenage Dreams and I would take a few more to add to it. Surprisingly they don't take up much space for an hour show. A half hour OTR takes up way more space....go figure. Could be because I have the OTRs at a higher bitrate. I may delete the 101 and below shows and would fill the space with more Teenage Dreams shows. There's some good rarities there but so does Wilson Beach have that also. I like Wilson Beach much more and Teenage Dreams best of all and I won't miss the 101 and below.
Can't say I remember the "Batusi", but then again I don't think I actually began watching the show till it had already become reruns in the 1970s. I had tried going to your site numerous times to check out your stream or your jingles the past month or so but could never get it to load.
@mark So far as not getting a response, it's probably because it's something completely off their radar, it's not exactly like most people know such a media even exist. Tell them you got a jukebox in a public place and they would promptly respond, but come at them with an obscure Part 15 broadcast situation inquiry and they're more likely to ignore it.
That's how it seems to me
The only reason BMI provides a Part 15 rider is because it got besieged with request for it about 20 years ago (according to them).
@mark, that's pretty much the case. If I'm the only known listener, I want to enjoy the programming as much as possible.
I still think that the Public Domain projects (@richpowers and @artisan-radio) are good things, and given my propensity for change, might eventually go back to it, at least partially.
Currently I have 6 shows, repeated 4 times a day - If It Ain't Baroque, Roaring Twenties, All That Jazz, Jukebox Hits (all the billboard hit from 1955 to 1966), Lost Jukebox (obscure 1950s and 1960s songs) and Teenage Dreams. So Roaring Twenties from my Public Domain experiment is still there.
I created If It Ain't Baroque to replace Classic Mode (historical 1920's classical recordings) because there were few baroque recordings from the 1920s. Most are from the 1960s and later; there was little interest in them back then. I might bring back Classic Mode at some point, replacing either Jukebox Hits or Lost Jukebox - some of those early recordings are very interesting and enjoyable.
I can see requiring a music license if you're going to be streaming, and/or attempting to bring in revenue from your station. Other than that, I don't see the point, and apparently, neither does SOCAN. Even when I was streaming, they went through internal machinations to decide whether to give me a copyright license, as the amounts involved were so small. The only applicable license is Non Commercial, and your fee is 1.9% of gross operating revenue (which is pretty close to zero for a hobby Part 15 station).
@richpowers, I haven't had my website and stream up for some time. The website is back up. I'm also going to bring up the stream, but access will be password protected for personal use only. The Blog is back up, and I plan on making it more active.
I haven't yet decided about the SDR Server.
@richpowers, It's going to be a creative challenge to feature the Batusi on the show. For all the other dance crazes, there are signature songs that kicked them off. This only has a TV show, which is kind of hard to broadcast on a radio program. I guess we'll see what I end up with.
So, I brought up the Blog last night, and today it's full of spam. Someone obviously hacked into it.
I've removed it, and replaced it with the SDR. Don't think I'm going to spend a lot of time fooling around with the Blog software, unless it's just a simple fix (like an upgrade).
Further update. I've decided to take down the Artisan Radio computer, do a thorough virus and malware check, and then, after that, decide what to bring back up.
