Yes. I remember your situation.
You are one very very brave guy.
I too, bought an external BFO kit -
for my Grundig S-350. The BFO was
bought 5 or 10 years ago from TenTec
kits. It is still sitting in the shipping
envelope unbuilt. HA HA HA HA
That's the way things work around here!
Thanks for the further information on
your S-450. I know it is not a perfect
radio, but I still wouldn't mind having one.
I really like - what do they sort of call them?
Field radios? I LOVE the concept of a field
radio.
I actually was thinking of getting another
S-350 off of E-Bay. I think the 350 is the
perfect size. I used to lug it all over the
house and out in the snow during snowstorms
and all over. It even rigged it for solar power
at one point. (But it needed more power than
the little bank of cells I had could really provide.)
It did really well in bright sunlight tho, and it
looked really cool with a solar panel on top of it.
I didn't used any battery supply with it, just
the solar cells. Of course that didn't work in the
winter time.
Oh yeah so the thing about getting an S-350
on E-Bay is... They are not cheap. That's
for sure.
This computer is driving me crazy.
Best wishes,
Brooce -
P.S. You know what I really miss on some
of these receivers - is a big lit analog S-meter.
My old vacuum tube beast has a nice one, but
it's at my brother's house

Finally had some time this evening to take a quick listen at 800 kHz and yes, CKLW is the one. Yep, when I was in high school almost 50 years ago CKLW was the BIG station to listen too while out cruising in the evening.
Hear my clip: 800 kHz
This was at 2140 on 160512. Storms west of here causing some static crashes but you can here the Beatles "Come Together", how appropriate.
Not hearing anything but static at 600 kHz tonight.
I hope to elaborate later.
Anyway I have been trying to
bring the noise level down on this
receiving set-up.
600 or 800? Well I just went with 800
last night because I think it's a little easier
here.
Conditions are iffy - the A and K index readings must
be up - i.e., not very good.
I got a Spanish language broadcast about 7:45 PM
local my time (EDT) no ID.
CKLW ID at midnight local.
Sometimes I get CJAD Montreal during
critical hours but that didn't happen.
Best Wishes
Brooce
600: KOGO is a 5,000 Watt local Fox outlet that I never listen to. Impossible to null it out and try to find others on that channel. They have the nerve to broadcast HD which destroys 590 and 610 for the most part.
800: this is a bit more interesting. It's Spanish language, nice strong signal and very steady, no fading. Haven't listened long enough to get a positive ID yet, but a quick search says KBFP is a Comedy-24/7 station in Bakersfield, 1,000W day and 440W night. Could be what I'm hearing... we'll see. It's very strange comedy... I haven't heard a single laugh track.
FYI, I'm using a Hammarlund HQ-120-X, originally built in 1940. I've had it since around 1972, and I've rebuilt and repaired it many times. Still my fave!
My 25 year old Sony ICF-2010 has
been sitting over at my brother's house
since we moved last year. He also has
one, so I figured I'd ask for it back to
see if I could use it here.
He said OK so he dropped it off and
I listened to it a lot last night - 600 kHz -
to hear what I could hear.
Bummer. Some nights DX skip from other
places -including Cuba - have blown over
and obliterated my semi-local WICC in
Bridgeport, Ct. (I'm in Hartford.)
But there was nothing.
The ionosphere didn't cooperate.
But trying was fun anyway.

I should have known because there was no fading that it would be from TJ. It is XESPN, a 1,000 Watter. It used to be affiliated with ESPN, hence the callsign (prior call was XEMMM). No longer affiliated.
Hope your next spin goes somewhere interesting.
You must be in California (?)
not too far from Mexico, I guess.
It's nice to meet you.
It's funny. When I started this AM BCB
DXing game, I didn't know what would happen.
It seems as if some people are having some fun.
I'm glad.
So I guess we'll go to round 3 pretty soon, because
there is some interest here.
Very best wishes to all.

I got a big kick out of your rules, Brooce, Goofy Radio Stuff.
Does this one count? -- I picked up 800 last night on my toaster. For an antenna I used a slice of whole wheat bread after it popped up. The signal was jammed (strawberry) so I ate it.
I love your humor, Brooce--keep it up!
It's all so subjective and in the mind of the beholder. I see complaints about off-topic remarks, non-technical remarks, getting this forum back to business and then it's ok to post about toast.
I get the point that you are commenting about Brooce's humor. Carl injects humor at times as do others and they are sometimes critisized for doing so.
Something about glass houses...
mram1500: Just to clarify--I didn't start the thread, just tried to inject a bit of humor. In the opening post to this thread, Brooce set the pace: "...But the rules are very open. You can say really whatever you want." So I did. You make a good case for just dumping out of this website......
Yes, I'm having them.
I am just barely getting messages up
onto the board here.
Anyway, if you saw the LPB carrier current
transmitter I have here, and what I had to do
to make it operate - - and the Gates Studioette board
here that I have been trying to restore for about
10 years- well - you would understand why I have
been signing off as "Goofy Radio," lately. We moved,
and the LPB and the Gates board came out of storage
and were delivered here on Saturday, and they are
messed up, but still fun.
If everybody's OK with it, I guess we'll get ready
for round THREE.
Verybest wishes to all
