You don't want to miss this one.. Radio Survivor posted a new podcast today, in which they focus on a part 15 AM station that has been around awhile, and many of us already know, or have at least heard of.. KCHUNG
https://soundcloud.com/radio-survivor/radiosurvivor74-anarchyvsorder

It's a well done and interesting listen. They accurately describe (briefly) the legalities of part 15, and focus on KCHUNG radio and express both amusement and fascination concerning the stations workings and operations. Interviews and sound clips are featured.

Carl, you ought to see about getting some sound clips for your show.

"Jennifer Waits brings us the voices of three programmers at a mysterious and chaotic community station with deep connections to the Los Angeles art scene. KCHUNG is an unlicensed part 15 AM radio station with about 40 station managers and extremely eclectic programming.

Paul Riismandel wrote a series of articles, offering strongly worded advice for struggling community radio stations. He lays out his arguments in detail on the podcast and discusses the ideas and issues with his co-hosts..."

Sounds great when other media covers Part 15, it doesn't seem to happen often.

I don't see the usual download link for the show, anyone know how to get it as a podcast, as opposed to listening on the web?

Flashgot - a Firefox extension or Replay Media Catcher.

Thanks The Lagecy, I did go to a computer with Video Download Helper on it and that did the job.

I just never had to do it before, Radio Survivor usually provides a direct download link on the podcast's page itself, at http://radiosurvivor.com, so it's a click, or hold and save on phones. Not having a link will make it less easy for people to get for their stations.

I'd heard of KCHUNG before, but hadn't checked it out. It's nice to hear more about Part 15 stations anywhere. It's seems there would be a larger concentration of P-15s in cities or around them, more people to run with the idea, more potential staff, more listeners in the station's range, but when you look at part 15 maps of stations, they seem to be spread out more, you don't have a dozen known stations in LA.

I think that's because Part 15 broadcasting lends itself more to smaller communities that are underserved by licensed stations.

That is why Hobby Broadcasting should be embraced not scoffed at.

I don't recommend offensive language on air however.

In cities, it seems you'd want to do neighborhood-scale broadcasting rather than trying to program for everyone in the city. I'd think with the big radio networks, people in cities would be underserved, there are so many more ears hungry for different kinds of programming.

It could be that people just don't try it as much in cities, and maybe don't know Part 15's potential there. For KCHUNG it doesn't really seem to matter, they have a strong station in LA that's something special. Could it be that it balances out, and there's really no difference between P15 in city or small town? Something was said on Radio Survivor about small towns being a more captive audience.

I don't use "broadcast offensive" George Carlin words on the air either, that's just a stand I've taken all along, and I'm only too quick to be a rebel in a lot of things. I figure, why turn people off with just single words, that wouldn't be necessary for communication.

Yet, sometimes songs come on that have thoes words in them, so it happens. I try to go by safe harbor, 10 pm to 6 am local time for the strong language, and my ideal station would follow that idea, it seems sensible.

I could say who cares, but I'd like to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of something, could it contain words offensive to some, but also serve the greater good as an idea that should be out there? I'm thinking of things like speeches, plays, poetry, spoken word.

The Radio Survivor Podcast via RSS, you don't necessarily need an RSS news reader to download this podcast.

Don't give up on Radio Survivor, unless something really changed, they might have just forgotten to add the link, I've seen it with some of their other shows where the link was missing.

Episode 75, a year-end retrospective. The download link has now been added to show 74 about KCHUNG, so now you can get it even without a grabber!
