Phone --> Auto Pickup?
Hi,
I'm looking to be able to do "live on location" casts from my station. Now, I can get my station to "listen" to an audio input at a specific time and for a time period, so that isn't an issue.
But what I'd like to be able to do is dial a number and have a device pick up and send the audio to the station (possibly also sending the station back to me so I can hear what's going on.. but that's not neccessary if I can do time right).
So... does anyone know of a inexpensive device I can build or buy that will answer the line and take audio to the mixer?
Old school answering machine... you know the one with the audio cassette. You might have to be creative to get audio out of it, but it will pick up and hang up automatically.

Oh nice.. yeah if I wire the speaker into a "line in" on my mixer that will work =) just dump some old micro-tape in there.. HA! great idea 🙂
I'm interested in knowing how too. It doesn't seem like it'd be very hard.
I'm thinking it can be done as thus:
Wire the speaker wires to a 1/8" plug (or RCA jacks) and run into a channel on your mixer.
Then put a "loop" of tape in the recorder. When you dial-in you'll hear the BEEP, which will then put you on the air, assuming your automation software was synced correctly and switched to "line input"
I did the old(cassette)machine myself..I could even monitor the station..my CC I had in the 80's thru the 90's...it could pick up the sound in the room...I had to push all kinds of numbers to make it work..I had the station in the garage...and I had the monitor up and yes I could listen to the montior(off)air next to the answering machine...I called it to see if it was on the air...an old south bell machine...I would even call in remotes from all over..when I was on vacation..and I had it hooked up where I had the phone and machine thanks to radio shack...I connected to the board..used a phone recorder connection with a 1/8 mono plug...one jack went through the phone and the other jack from the phone went into the coupler and then the mini jack w/1/4 plug to the board..one time I was at RENO and "remoted"from a 50's cafe in the world's largest Bowling center...and all over RENO..my radio shack weather alert went off...ata home a a police officer we knew got a complaint...from a neighbor"beacuse of the alarm went off"the NOAA WX tested the alarm wednesday's and I forgot...so he got it the garage and turned off everything...he pushed all kinds of buttons...yes the LPB XTR..until the alarm went off...I did not know this until I came home...
I remoted everywhere...I had a 5lb cell phone...yes the battery was mobile and the handset was connected to the 5lb battery..with a small rubber antenna..I bought the phone for 700.00 from RS in 1989...
I had a good time...the LPB CC was on 830 and later 680/30 watts...bought it for 1500.00 in 1989 had it until 1995....the ac wires were all connected good....and went all over..I served 75% town out of 13,000 pop...no extra transmitters...the ac lines were connected really good...I even bought a business VHF radio...did remotes too..and remoted from my mobile DJ dances...those were the good times...sorry..
