Hi good friends, I want to start a low-power fm station and call it something like "Radio Caroline," evoking the image of those old times. I figured a person's name like that is best, but I have looked through name lists and such and can't come up with anything good. What ideas do you have for a name like "Radio Caroline," which evokes the feel and image of one of those old radio stations and that better time in world history? That's my favorite era of radio and I just want to be part of it somehow. Thanks!
Radio Caroline got its name because the founder of the off-shore radio ship admired Carline Kennedy, the pres ident's daughter.
Can you think of someone you highly admire, female or male?
Also, maybe you want the name to sound like that of an ocean-going vessel... a ship anchored off-shore somewhere.
The names of ships are often designated with an "S.S." identity, for example I crossed the Atlantic on the S.S. Henry Gibbons. I forget what the "S.S." stands for.
Maybe yours won't be a ship. Maybe you'll be up in a zepplin hidden by cloud cover.
Maybe you'll be aboard a railroad train that moves from city to city.
I've thought of broadcasting from a 3,000-foot tower in the Antarctic.
There are many ideas, nobody has ever counted them all.
Make yourself (or buy one) a model boat, aluminium is the best. Build a 3 meter antenna on it with a SSTran or whatever and ofcourse some battery's to. Now you have to dig a pool and fill it up with (salt) water. Anchor your boat ("Albatros") in the middle. One problem and thats the STL, but .........
Hee guys it's only a dream, or isn't it??

I have thoughs about this often, as over the course of life I've had to come up with names for many things, from kids to boats to airplanes to bands. One thing I've learned is...
We all have a collection of names and such in our heads that we think are neat, or cool, or clever, etc. And when we try to come up with a name we generally try to find one similar to something we already think is cool. The thing is, that name we think is cool has the impression of coolness in our brain because of what it's associated with. Would you have thought Caroline was a great name for a radio station if you only knew it as, say, a brand of peas? No. It's because it's the name of something you already relate to, so that makes it a good name.
As mentioned above, I think the idea of thinking of someone or some thing you already admire, respect, etc and using that name. My oldest daughter, Jennifer, was named after a really cute girl I used to date in high school My next daughter is named Krystal, after the Crystal Sugar Company because she was a very sweet baby, and my son is named Ryan -- after the builder of Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis.
Whatever name you choose will take on it's level of "coolness" as time goes on and it takes on the personality of (in this case) your station. You might never even reveal the reason behind the name. Sa, you're a fan of the band "The Guess Who" their lead singer was Burton Cummings. You could be "Radio Burton" or "Radio Cummings". No one would have to know and the personality that goes with the name becomes it over time. Really. Think of things important to you and see where you can go with it.
