Hi Guys!.My name is Mauro I live in Europe and I'm interested about lpa am transmitter ( low power) In my country is not possible to have a broadcast still now like Usa but in last time many politics have claimed the possibility to give a am frequency like usa for low power station. So,in advance...I have many question for You,Guys...Tank you in advance for your answer....
1 Wich is the better am transmitter ( 100 mw) that I can buy ( 9 khz space)?
2 How long feet is possible to cover with the original antenna a piece 3 mt long wire? (transmitter outside building in a roof no obstacle for 300 ft)?
3 Better modulation quality ( that maybe I can improve with a external audio compressor)?
4 Strenght of power if is equal to all model or change a lot?

I see spitfire gizmo,sstran 300,rangemaster ,lp88,ma 25 ramsey electronic(maybe better choice?)
(talking house am spaced is only 10 khz I think)
but I don't know if exist a difference....
Tanks a lot Guys!

Hello Mapero:

I will comment on the one transmitter which I know, even though others are also good.

The SStran 3000 can be ordered with 9kHz spacing, is true 100mW and has excellent audio quality with built in limiter/compressor and has built-in boost for the high frequencies if wanted, making it sound more clear. I have two of them here in the U.S. and love them.

You definitely should read this Forum and the comments re the various available transmitters.

But there are several tiers, if you will, of AM transmitters that adhere to the Part 15 100mw limit. Which one you choose would depend on your budget and how much range you want.

At the top are the Rangemaster and the ProCaster. Even though expensive, and relatively difficult to set up for best results, you can achieve the best sound and greatest distance from them. At a cost, of course.

I'd group the SSTran, Talking House, Gizmo, Spitfire, et al into the next tier. Reasonable to nice sounding, relatively inexpensive, relatively easy to set up, you can get up to 1/4 mile or more from them (with a tuned antenna, with the supplied wire at least the 300 feet you talked about).

Finally, I'd lump the Ramseys and other non certified transmitters into the bottom tier. I'd stay away from them, as quality is generally inferior and you really don't know what you're getting.

If you can, it's a good idea to put a compressor and other audio processing in your audio chain between the source and the transmitter. Some transmitters have audio processing built-in, such as the ProCaster and the SSTtran, and you can certainly experiment with it, but I think you get better quality and a lot more flexibility with external processing.

And I guess the experimentation comment also goes for transmitters as well. If you've done some research, you'll find various people waxing enthusiastically over one particular transmitter or the other, and making claims about range, quality, etc. that are, in my mind, dubious at best. If you can, you should experiment with several transmitters in the first 2 tiers, and pick the best one for your particular needs and source material (and budget, of course).

Dear Artisanradio,Yes you tell me the true thing to find information to this forum
My intention was to open a topic for all neewbie like me that like have a quick summary to introduce about am lpd,and You have gently write the basic rules.
I asked for know how many feet usually without obstacoles I can reach, because I'm in a countryside and i'm a farmer and my house is almost in centre to my propriety that is more than 600 ft long and 1000 ft wide.so,I can think to make experimental transmission, change kind of transmitter make antenna etc without broadcast outside my farm.
Medium wave space here is very free and I can find easily a frequency without transmitter.( only we have "like radio jammer" radio china international that broadcast with a terrible splatter and hum near to Principality of Montecarlo mont Agelle,702 khz.i'm in plan to use one frequency to last part of band to 1600 khz....
Tank you all Guys for your help.I'm waiting one transmitter from Usa and I give my impression next time,I set .
Another question..What kind of power supply is better ac or dc?
With ac I need to convert usa 115 60 hz to europe 220 50 hz
maybe can make more hum?
Tank you for all help You give Guys!

You can easily achieve 1/4 mile range with either the Rangemaster or the ProCaster with reasonable listening quality. The quality of your signal is the great equalizer in discussing range but probably the least discussed; the farther the range, the more noise introduced and at some point you have to ask yourself whether you can listen to the the resulting signal for any length of time. I guess it all depends on your (or your listener's) ears, the type of material being transmitted (music, old time radio, talk) etc.

Most transmitters require DC, usually supplied by a supplied wall wart. Hum can be an issue unless using a well regulated power supply, as only the more expensive transmitters provide effective filtering. I've never had hum issues with the Rangemaster or Procaster, had terrible problems with the Talking House, Talking Sign and the SSTran as examples (I've experimented with almost all the transmitters that I mentioned in my previous post).
