In a recent issue of RadioWorld News was mention of a free application which can be used as a two way, full duplex audio remote link over the internet.
The website is ipDTL.com.
The free account provides a 40 kb audio stream. Of course if you pay to subscribe the bitrate can be substantially higher.
Basically you create a free account with two login names such as "station" and "remote". These will share the same password. When you log into your "station", as soon as your "remote" logs on your screen will flash RED to alert you of the waiting connection. Click on "connect" and you have a two way audio link between the "station" and the "remote".
You may have to play with the sound card settings to avoid loopback problems. The only other catch is it requires the Google Chrome browser.
Setting up the account may be intimidating for the slightly paranoid with the required info. But, it doesn't appear to be problematic and the service seems to work.
Great find! I signed up. Not quite sure what I might use it for at this stage. Perhaps feeding a remote transmitter (for extended range), but OTOH that might be just as easily done from my internet stream. In any case, it will be fun to at least experiment with, and may come in handy when I need a quick link for a remote broadcast.
Well, I've been playing with the ipDTL application. It has a few quirks about it but in general seems to work.
I'm setting it up to use on my SmartPhone for live remotes. Ideally there will be WiFi available to make the internet connection but I could use the data connection provided by the cell carrier in a pinch.
I have the pinout for the SmartPhone headset jack which details the microphone connection. The plan is to make an adapter cable to have an external microphone or small mixer connected to the phone. Although, the SmartPhone internal microphone could be used.
I did find a pro adapter for the SmartPhone which provides an XLR microphone connection with an adjustable preamp. It does not provide phantom power for condensor mics. It's a bit pricey at $250.
Anyway, I have been able to connect to my station PC from the SmartPhone which will allow live remotes.
