Tomorrow, I'm headed up to Hartford (state capital of CT) for a political protest. I'm trying to figure out the best way (if there is a way) to record audio/interviews at the event for later play on Radio Free Connecticut. What do you guys suggest for this purpose?
An Olympus voice recorder.....one of the higher end models that will record in high quality MP3 files.
I have a Sony ICD-PX312 which I chose because it appears as a disc drive using Windows Media Player Classic. No special software needed to retrieve the files.
The only down side I encountered, and something to be aware of for any of these tiny recorders, is that it is easy to accidentally hit the wrong button just by handling the unit. You may be recording and then it suddenly reverts to PLAY or STOP. Needs a bit of practice to avoid this. Otherwise, sound quality is good and run time is long.

I use a TASCAM. Stereo with condenser mics. Also simply plug into USB port to DL files. Both mp3 or WAV. About 100 bucks but well worth it.

Are you doing gun-and-run field interviews, or full sit-down table talks?
If the former, use your smartphone. You already paid for it, the audio recorder app is generally free, and even with the onboard mic the audio is formidable.
I'm writing from a capital city, and there isn't one radio newsperson here using anything other than their phone.
