The reason most of Artisan Radio's programming consists of public domain material is that I want to stream.
However, I also want to take advantage of the fact that 1) licensing bodies here in Canada don't seem to care about BETS-1 over the air broadcasting and 2) I've already got a lot of shows I've produced (not all public domain) 'in the can' so to speak, and would like to make use of them.
I've recently discovered that the BUTT encoder supports command line operations, and I've been testing incorporating some of them in my Salamandra events.
I currently have a 4 x 6 hour programming blocks per day. For one of those hours in each block, I've been broadcasting (over the air) 50s and 60s music, as well as randomly-selected Teenage Dreams shows (and I hope to do more of them in the future). What I do is just before that hour, I send a command (through an event) to BUTT to stop streaming, and before the next hour begins, to start streaming. After a few hiccups, it's been working beautifully.
You would have to reconnect manually to the stream for the next show (after waiting about an hour), but some players will try reconnecting automatically if you just let them run.
There is theoretically a way to continue streaming if I run 2 instances of Salamandra, and the audio processing apps, each using different Virtual Audio Cables. There are BUTT commands to start an instance of BUTT with a different configuration file (using the appropriate Virtual Audio Cable), but you'd have to stop the currently running instance, and the connection would drop anyway.
I could, of course, run Salamandra on 2 different computers, and stop/restart BUTT with different configurations to use each at the right times.
But, that's all pretty complicated, and I just took the simple way out.
In the future, when I move to a house (and that appears definite right now, I just have to find the right one), I'll likely run an all public domain transmission on AM, and stream that (the AM transmission will just be for myself, of course, not advertised). I'll run a 50s & 60s BETS-1 broadcast on FM without streaming, as it's that that causes all the potential copyright problems.
If the licensing bodies turn around and say they care about BETS-1, then I'll rethink the situation. I don't believe they've gotten back to @mark yet, so they don't appear all that interested.
Nope, they never got back to me! They don't know what it is. Shows how interested they are. But if I was in the USA I'd be paying BMI and if I called them they would know what part 15 is. And if they wanted a few days log with song and singer once a year so what. That doesn't take away my freedom to have control over my broadcast or play what I want. I'd just set Salamandra to keep the log in a file in the computer and they would tell me how to get such a huge file with several days of all those songs and OTRs and times they played to them. They'd have a lot to go through! I don't think they'd(Canada) take my money for a music license if I tried to give money to them. At least back when several years ago when I contacted I could talk to a person there, even the manager at Resound, not an operator who just answers the phone after I have to listen to a long recording and press numbers for all kinds of things, none of which apply to me! After all, I should hear, "for BETS-1 press 8" I don't think they will change their mind if they haven't by now.
