Carrying over from another thread, and in response to Marks comment.. In an attempt to track down Marks 1630 AM station in Toronto, I came across some other Toronto low power AM stations on 1630...
@Rich Powers What you found wasn't me but a site with listings of streaming stations from anywhere in the world.
I'm wasn't referring to the Get Me Radio site itself, I was pointing out the specific station:
According to wiki "AM1630 is not a standard broadcast frequency for a Canadian AM radio station. However, the frequency is used by The Breeze XTRA, a station that was operated at one time as a "Drive-In Radio" service in the Toronto area. It is accessible as an online streaming station." - so I linked to it: https://www.getmeradio.com/stations/driveinradio1630-3924
Drive In Radio!
AM1630 The Breeze XTRA - Classic Oldies Radio, 1630 The Breeze XTRA, Drive In Music Radio! CRBZ-DB
Toronto AM1630
I also discovered while looking for a 1630 Canadian station, this Middle School station which I'm not sure if I had seen before or not, I'll have to look into it: RazorRadio.net
The official news and information station for Walhalla Middle School · AM · 1630
The home of unforgettable and timeless hits
https://streema.com/radios/RazorRadio.net
They also show streams at https://www.radio.net/s/razorradiowalhalla and
https://sites.google.com/g.oconee.k12.sc.us/www-razorradio-net/home
And some lincensed Canadian 1630 AM:
CHYW Ottawa
A low-power tourist information radio station that operated from the Macdonald-Cartier International Airport which was approved by the CRTC to operate on 1630 kHz in 2001.[23] Its uncertain when the station left the air.
[23]Decision CRTC 2001-67, New low-power information service, CRTC, February 14, 2001 https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2001/db2001-67.htm
And..
https://www.sierramadreca.gov/services/public_information/am_radio_1630
AM Radio 1630
Sierra Madre's Community Radio station, 1630-AM, is on the air 24/7. The station broadcasts the latest information about community happenings (Art Fair, Wistaria Festival, Pancake Breakfast, Huck Finn Fishing Derby, and senior activies) as well as official information during emergencies. Even if your electricity is off, or your cable TV, internet, cell phone, or regular telephone fails, 1630-AM will be on the air.
Because the Sierra Madre Canyon area is at high risk from fire, flood, mudslides, etc., every effort has been made to ensure adequate reception within the area. (Note that in the event of a fire or other emergency, the radio station will operate in a special "Emergency Mode" which will improve coverage in all the areas and especially in the canyon.)
1630-AM is best received on a car radio. To have your community event announced on 1630-AM, or to be a volunteer announcer for the station, send an e-mail to [email protected].
Lastly, not sure what this was because the YouTube video it linked is defunct but it's about a 1630 AM pirate.. https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/53yu32/am_radio_pirate_broadcast_nj_am_1630/
Have never heard of the Breeze or any other stations around Toronto on 1630 although I am liking that Breeze one but if it is over the air now or ones that have existed in the past are very local similar to "part 15" stations and I would never know if they have never been in my areas or I have never in my travels come across them. I may try to contact the Breeze 1630 and if they exist now and where they are. But it says they are streaming now, not over the air.
Me personally am not listed anywhere. I cancelled that web site I made and since I am not listed anywhere I am not visible for anyone to find me unless I tell locals in my area about it like I did with my few listeners. Someone could come across it by accident by surfing the dial on a radio in the area but most people aren't doing that. Or even listening to radio.
@mark Well I'm surprised you never heard of his station when you live in the same area, Toronto is only covers 250 square miles! (Joking of course) As for if he's still on the air, he still advertises as1630 AM and still uses the "Drive-in Radio" slogan which at very least implies he's on the air as well as online. Haven't found much info about the station, only little snippets here and there. I haven't tried to contact him, at least not yet. Listened to his station for a while last night. Was trying to make sense of what CRBZ-DB refers to, thought it might be a call sign or something but about all I could find was an calligraphy artist in Switzerland named CRBZ.
I thought the middle school campus station was pretty cool too.
The only reason I came across them was because I was searching for your "1630 AM" station in "Toronto"!
I speculated possibly he had broadcast from an actual drive-in snack bar before and after and during intermissions of the movies, because music AM broadcast from the snack bars seems to have been rather common in the US, but Toronto doesn't have any Drive-in, but there is one about an hour away from there, so I asked Google AI if they had ever utilized an AM broadcast, here's the response:
- AM was a US phenomenon: While some drive-ins in the US experimented with "carrier current AM" in the 1960s and 70s, it was not as widespread in Canada. For smaller and more remote drive-ins like the one in Enderby, the more straightforward upgrade was to move directly from wired speakers to the superior audio quality of FM broadcasting.
I'm not sure how accurate that is, I am sure that Google AI can be very inaccurate and often times makes up things out of the blue. But I tend to suspect it's above response would prove true if conformation was sought out. I don't think I've ever came across any vintage newspaper or magazine articles about unlicensed low power AM in Canada prior to the 1990s .
Well that's not true, but not with unlicensed carrier current and such
