Air Traffic Control
A little known but essential job within radio & TV stations is the traffic director, responsible for continuously planning and organizing the daily schedule including spots, announcements, and everything else that gets programmed.
At KDX the traffic director struggles between time delayed programs VS. vital news of the moment.
To give a recent example, we air the Thom Hartman Show from the day before, because carrying it live would require a manual process that exceeds our capacity.
But we will not carry the Hartman Show that took place during Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee because Thom's remarks will not reflect the fuller hearings that went on to bring Judge Kavanaugh's self defense.
We will return to Thom Hartman with shows done following the Hearings.
Juggling programming between real-time and latent time is dictated by the immediacy of some news events. Such was also the case with Hurricane Florence, which we did not want to be a day late in reporting about, solved by carrying live coverage from news stations in North Carolina.
