Everyone will be so proud of me when they know that I have invented a new programming gimmick when it comes to classical music. It all began when I was wondering which rarely heard Prokofiev Symphony to play. Only two of his seven symphonies tend to get heard most of the time.
His Symphony No. 1 is subtitled "The Classical Symphony" because it is written in the old style of Haydn or Mozart and gained instant popularity.
The Symphony No. 5 is an all time masterpiece and contributed to the the composer's elevation to the top ranks. On a weekend the local orchestra gave three performances of No. 5 and I attended all three, becoming enthralled by the piece and made a point of telling Maestro Jerzy Semkow that his interpretation was better than any of the recordings by anyone else.
But Symphonies, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 7 go mostly neglected, so I put them all in the KDX playlist back-to-back and had a whole day's program which provided an excellent backdrop to the work I got done. It's an idea that will work only on radio, as no concert going audience could endure such a lengthy extravaganza so far from the refrigerator.
Now I have the fun of selecting another composer to try this with. Hmm. I'll let you know.
