WEXP Returns With Pop-Up Block Programming “Experimental Radio”
“Radio used to be block programmed like television, with different shows at different times of the day and week. So we had the idea to work with well-known local radio personalities and experiment with ‘pop-up’ programming to offer kinds of music that aren’t available elsewhere. We’d like to get an idea of what might catch on with radio listeners looking for. Meanwhile, we’re having some fun with it.”
Why is this not more common today?
@richardpowers Although I promote my station as 'news, talk', I more generally name it as 'variety', because there's a lot of experimental music thrown in and some OTR. I had forgotten the expression 'block programming', and now I will return to using that description.
@carl-blare Yeah I heard your experimental stuff playing today.. and the other day... I like the talk better. But variety is the spice of anything. Where is your schedule? I usually just tune in randomly, though semi-consistenly.
I guess you can say I have block programming. My weekday schedule consists of 2 Hr blocks of talk then 2 hr blocks of music...
@richardpowers The schedule for KDX is no longer published on my website because it was never in synch with when programs actually aired. This was because I arise at different times everyday... some days as early as 3 AM and other days as late as 11 AM. A set of newscasts must be manually downloaded and a number of programs carefully planned like a puzzle to fit into the space until 11 AM when the Thom Hartmann Program is streamed live. To make it more complicated some of the programs are 30-minutes in length, others as long as 3-hours. If a program doesn't fit in the space before Thom Hartmann it gets moved until afterward, Thom's show being 3-hours in length.
Here is the last Schedule I posted before removing it:
