I usually enter the forum via the "Recent Post" links, but having the same option for "Recent Threads" often comes in handy when trying to find a recent post that might have otherwise been already well-buried.

Many forums also offer a recent topics links access, which can come in quite handy, can we do that here?

You have to contact admin for that. Yes I agree that you look at the recent posts but if there are more than 5 new they are missed and/or you have to go to the forum topics and check there to see if new ones. Hard for me too as I have to see everything and if I am not here for a while, or a day,  it's the same with me. That has to be set up by the webmaster. That is a drawback that all things get buried as more posts come. And the more posters the faster everything get buried.
Yes there should be both, recent threads and posts.

Generally I've been subscribing to every member that post, that way I get an email with the copy of their new post when made, however usually read them then delete, but it's a convenient way not to miss anything.

But anyway, a Recent Topics companion to the Recent Post stream would be a nice addition

It was a while ago, but when we moved over to Wordpress, I had to do some work to get the Recent Posts to display properly.  I can't remember whether there was a Recent Threads option.  I believe you can increase the number of Recent Posts.

I will do some checking.

I haven't been able to find anything to implement a Recent Threads section, but did increase the number of Recent Posts to 10, which may help a bit.

However, I'm not an expert on Wordpress, and will follow up to see what, if anything, can be done.

@artisan-radio You got love Google ai, I searched "Wordpress add recent topics" and thus began the ai overview...

AI Overview

To add recent topics (posts) to a WordPress website, you can use the Recent Posts widget, a plugin, or a shortcode. You can also customize the display with Gutenberg blocks or by modifying your theme's files.

Here's a breakdown of methods:

1. Using the Recent Posts Widget:
  • Access the Widget area: Log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Widgets.
  • Add the widget: Find the Recent Posts widget and drag it to your desired widget area (e.g., sidebar, footer).
  • Customize: Add a title, choose the number of posts to display, and save your changes.

________

it continues with further detsils from there

@artisan-radio Wordpress is what my website provider wants us to use. It has changed much in recent years. It's more complicated now, than it was several years back.

The Recent Posts plug-in in Wordpress only deals with posts, not threads.

The Extended (i.e., paid for) plug-in lets you filter by thread, but doesn't just do recent threads.

I'm not going to touch the idea of custom code on an already working Forum.  As I said, I'll ask the expert (JP Janze).

My research was done using non AI techniques.  I just don't trust AI; often, those summaries are just plain wrong, don't fully answer the question, or don't take into consideration other factors.

@artisan-radio I thought it was as easy as dragging the recent topics widget into place and activating it as the tutorial suggested. It sounded easy to do when I read it, but I guess anything is easy on paper.

It was just a thought, not that much of a biggie. We can live without it.

That's the widget that is being used - it's called Recent Posts.  It operates on posts only, not topics.  It has various properties that allow you to customize it somewhat (such as the number of posts that display).

The extended version of the widget, which is payware, allows you to filter a bit (such as By Forum).

As far as I can see, there is nothing that will display only the Recent Threads.  But my knowledge of Wordpress is limited, which is why I'm asking the expert.

OK, I think I found what was wanted, and added it.  I reduced the number of recent posts.  Is that the order you want the two things in, or should the Recent Threads be moved to the top?

Does anyone (or everyone) find the Topic Tags at the top useful?  They can be removed to create extra space so more Topics/Posts can be displayed.

@artisan-radio I haven't used the tags but yes they are useful I guess but can you change the spelling to Windows from the way it is there?

Doesn't matter to me which order the recent posts and topics are in.

I find them handy and use them sometimes, but you could move it to the bottom, as the recent post and topics get the most use.

I'm glad you got implemented.

Coming from a newcomer to the forums, I haven't touched the tag section once, and go straight to the Recent Posts, FWIW!
