WCRV is BACK… on the air! On a very limited basis now.
Basically, I’ve moved the antenna indoors once again. Some of you may remember I did this before with limited success.

Basically, I’ve moved the antenna indoors once again. Some of you may remember I did this before with limited success.
It was an occasion where I was testing the antenna indoors, and received the station about a mile away with great audio.
For the interested, this particular time, the antenna was basically horizontal in the studio, which made the results even more interesting.
This time, the antenna is installed correctly, but without the ground system it requires. It has two ground points, but I’ve found a radial system to be a major plus with this particular antenna. Remember, I live in a mobile home, surrounded by alluminum, and the goal of 1 mile is not a dream; it is possible.
A lot less than the 3.6 mile contour I got, but then, again, I’m at a disadvantage. For some reason, it is tuning best at 1410am (which as you know is very
strange). Joyce drove the signal home from work Tuesday night and indicated it was a “choppy signal”, best close to home (naturally). 1410 is noisy here, and I was probably overmodulated.
It is yet again another start, but without the antenna outside visible, if I can make it as efficeint as possible, there may be some hope for WCRV yet.
The other thing is that the station was tested at close to sunset (critical hours). In the fall, as you know, this is a problem especially for low power
AM. I will continue to work on the new configuration of WCRV, and let you know of my progress.

It is with DEEP regret that I must inform you that WCRV 1510 has been
taken off the air, “permanently”.

It is with DEEP regret that I must inform you that WCRV 1510 has been
taken off the air, “permanently”.
The fact is, the landlord doesn’t want a radio station on thier land,
much less a radio broadcasting antenna.
I’d like to tell you a little story, but before I do, I want to make
this point clear: My personal intention is to make WCRV a going
concern; that is, get permission from the landlord to air it in some
way.
What is worse, is that I finally built an antenna, a ground system, and
a “disguise” for the antenna, in the form of a great flagpole, which,
given just another hour, would have been fully completed.
I waited patiently for this day; all the components were assembled,
and
I tested the antenna for a solid week before determining that it was
ready to be “entombed” in it’s flagpole cover.
The station was reaching anywhere from 3.6-4 miles at it’s best, and
this time, the signal did not waver over the week’s time I tested it.
This time, I got it perfect.
(It only took 10 months to get it to the point where I considered it
perfect).
What’s more, Joyce and I completed work on a brand new website to
support it, had the letter all typed to go out to the residents, and
the
new schedule was typed, including some new jingles put on cart. We
were
ready to be on the air whenever need be, plus an automation system was
being worked on (I’m not giving up on it) so we could be on air for
more
hours.
About the only thing that will save WCRV’s future is a possible meeting
with the board to again explain the purpose of WCRV, how WCRV can help
them and the reality that the WCRV antenna can be masked, so that it
doesn’t look like an antenna.
Let me go there for a minute: the park doesn’t allow radio antennas;
that was the first obstacle. The only way I could hide the antenna was
to either place it in the woods (thereby effectively placing it on
someone elses’ property besides my own), or to go with a wire affair,
which I tried and had little or no luck with. One of the owners, a
friend, said that if I could HIDE it, it wouldn’t be a concern.
However, in the meantime, the few in here who had antennas (CB mostly)
were forced to take them down.
Our busy-body neighbor who has her nose
in everyones business, watched me fiddle with our first incarnation of
a
flagpole antenna; which worked, but not perfectly, not to my
standards.
My feeling was if I had left it the way it was, WCRV would still be on
the air. But it looks, I guess, like a major construction effort when
you are installing metal poles and digging in the ground, and
measuring,
and this lady is not stupid.
Not only that, the park management and I have been around this before,
and my guess is that they were just waiting for me to get it installed.
And that is exactly what they did; to the minute!
There is no rule against a radio station, but I suspect that there will
be a rule against it this year.
I want to thank you for all of your contributions to WCRV: we truly
did
have a great summer of programming, and I will keep all of those
programs, with the hopes that WCRV, in some way, will return to the
air.
People change, things change, and I have developed an attitude of
“Never
Say Never”.
Lastly, I want to say that I am devestated.
VERY devestated. Not only is this my hobby, but a life long dream to
own a radio station that really is one; this one had reach. With the
help of Charles Blanding to build the transmitters, and Phil Boylan of
SSTRAN, whose transmitter we used, and all their advice, I put this
radio station together, and I have to say, it sounds as good if not
better than your local AM station. I took several liberties with it,
did some unconventional things, and they all payed off in the long run:
It is something I an proud of, and something I had to come home to day
after day. I really looked forward to running WCRV. Now, I don’t have
it.
Needless to say, I am downright depressed.
I want to thank all of you for your hard work in programming WCRV. It
is because of you that WCRV had the sound it had…all of your work
came
together so smoothly.
I plan to keep this email address open, and I also plan to not give up.
