Power Questions

February 1, 2011 by Carl Blare

It’s a good time to raise power related questions, as many U.S. locations are right now experience deadly weather which could result in outages.

It’s a good time to raise power related questions, as many U.S. locations are right now experience deadly weather which could result in outages.

Several years ago we had a killer ice storm which dribbled late into the night at ground temperature of about 30-degrees, and besides trees toppling from ice weight, power transformers blew up. Skip ahead to the present, and after a whole day of rain at 29-degrees there are surprisingly few outages being reported on the utility website. Now the rain has turned to sleet.

Question: what is it about freezing rain that causes a power transformer to explode?

Why is sleet any different from rain as far as the transformers are concerned?

Another utility resource, the gas company, reports it is also ready for outages. What would cause a gas outage?

Project Pulled

January 27, 2011 by Carl Blare

The carrier current project which had been planned, has been pulled.

The carrier current project which had been planned, has been pulled.

Noticing that the radios tune 520kHz, and seeing that Part 15.219 allows activity from 510 to 1705kHz, it seemed like a natural.

Here in the midwaste the 520 channel is completely open, awaiting my claim.

Have you so far detected my mistake?

Part 15.219 applies to 3-meter intentional radiation, but NOT to carrier current.

The carrier current allowance comes under Part 15.221, but has a different frequency span. It covers 525 to 1705kHz.

The disappointment goes deep, but at least I didn’t order a 520kHz crystal.

Why did the FCC make that slight difference between the two modes of radiation?

Good DX Catch

January 27, 2011 by Carl Blare

It’s 10:07 PM CENTRAL and I am hearing a barely listenable signal here on the eastern edge of Missouri coming from KYAL in Tulsa Oklahoma at 1550kHz. The only thing about it is that their nightime power is only 40 Watts!

Their day power is 2.5kW, so even that would be unusual to hear.

In which I follow a comment made on the site that “some people call classical music lovers stuck up and phony.” In my program I track the history and meaning of this slogan, all the way back to the founding of the Nation.

It is meant for part 15 enjoyment.

E-Mail Problem

January 14, 2011 by Carl Blare

Twice now I have had e-mails sent to known good addresses be rejected without understanding what went wrong. It just happened again when attempting to reach Rhema Radio via that website’s CONTACT page. Here is the rejection message (in part):

—– The following addresses had permanent fatal errors —–

(reason: 550 Host unknown)

—– Transcript of session follows —–
550 5.1.2 … Host unknown (Name server: rhemaradio.org: host not found)

Last night I enjoyed the Rhema stream and admired the website, and was hoping to convey my reaction.
