An idea for a comfy indoor heater….
Build what looks like a medium sized transmitter, full of large electron tubes, power it up and generate enough heat to warm a room. The transmission is in the “heat band”.
A home heater that would be beautiful to see.

and I was afraid of it, because
there was some kind of arching
that would occur inside on
occasion.
This was, again, from a day when
kids – we were kids THEN – were
playing around with dangerous
equipment all the time.
I bolted a big blower onto the top
to try to cool the unit. What I got
was “Blower Modulation” when I transmitted
Morse code! My friends could hear the
blower! The modulation was all mechanical,
I guess.
Wow. I have aquired duplicates of some
of my old equipment. But not that thing!

And use the tubes to light up the life…that is if you got a generator capable of pushing them when the power bill isn’t paid!
I think it would be easier to just purchase a camping stove, a few bottles of propane and be comfy cozy warm and have some light.
Amazing..all those folks over on the East coast outdoors with their little kids in the freezing cold complaining about no electricity and no heat, yet standing out there holding signs protesting instead of sitting at home with portable camping stoves and propane bottles and roasting marshmallows.
Hate to see what happens when the cell phones go dead.

You don’t even need tubes for a device to heat a room.
Last winter I was running 4 computers simultaneously to support Artisan Radio in all its various aspects, along with various and sundry external hard drives, UPS’s, etc.
That array heated an unheated room – I usually had to open windows and doors to keep the temperature in line when I was working there.
And my first server years ago was a 100 pound IBM monstrosity with 4 processors, triple power supplies, hot swappable SCSI hard drives. That thing heated up the entire bookstore that I had it in.
Although I have to admit tube radios are tres cool – I listen to my radio station on a 1950s tube radio – the sound is incredibly warm (audio wise, not heat wise).

RFB, when I lived on Bowen Island, I actually didn’t mind power going out during the winter (which it did quite often, at least until they instituted an island wide drive to trim all trees that were near power lines).
Get the fireplace going, light some candles, fire up the generator occasionally to recool the fridge/freezer – hey, it was peaceful, with no extraneous distractions, and you got to read a lot. But then, we learned on the island to prepare for power outages and other emergencies (such as the ferry breaking down, going on strike, whatever).

Yep. Better to know what to do to survive than to sit and bitch about something that happens by yearly regular things such as storms that knock out utility.
One would think that those folks over there along the East coast who has been through outages and storms MANY MANY times before, would have it figured out by now.
They all act like its the first time they ever been without power or been through a storm.
Probably most of those folks do have a home with a fireplace. Given the number of them holding signs in the freezing cold with their kids out there too in the cold, those fireplaces are probably gas or heating oil types with electrical control systems and ignitors. Still one can find alternatives to be comfortable in their own homes without having to rely on an umbilical cord like a baby in a womb.

Carl, it sounds like a great idea, it could work, but if it doesnt work, you can get a one room heater at dollar general or lowes for around 15-30 dollars depending on what brand and model you get,
if all else fails try that,

concerned, I don’t know why people got
so crazy. But a lot of the damage was

I was all ready this year, and we didn’t
loose power.
