3.0 quakes/close calls with tornadoes/National Emergencys/fault lines/Hurricanes forming and my radio station reacting
well today i had another sharp pain in my back today while i was eating lunch and i found out that 3.0 quake just southeast of chickasha and i also found out that there is a fault line forming north of lawton and one small fault line in commerce, texas. if their any other types of emergency going on and if it hits sherman denison i doubt that any radio station will be on the air after a quake, large tornadoes, Civil Emergency, Hurricanes, Eemergency Action Notifications, any type of big violent situations.
theres alot of things going on wether its man made, weather hazards, sesmic emergencies or any type of emgerncy going on and i noticed that grayson and fannin counties is testing their cable override EAS Endec alot lately fannin county test theirs 2 twice in one hour. and i heard that FEMA is going to do an National EAN Emergency test for the whole country using CAP sometime after october. north texas has been hit with remants of hurricanes.
i just wonder if any of this happens, how long will the stations stay on the air? what would my station be able to do? What will i do? What is my Family gonna do? hows is sherman denison gonna react to this? how will the whole Country will react to?

You’d be surprised how well some of these stations are backed up.
Most stations in our area have Generators and alternate tower sites.
No stations on after a disaster?
Remember that large tornado outbreak we had a few months ago? I don’t think any of our locals went off the air.
Take a peep at California, the most Earthquake Riddled area in America, yet somehow their stations stay on the air.

They will be conducting a national test of the new EAS on November 9th at 2pm Eastern Time.

KMKT KMAD KQDR ive been to their studios they do not have generators, i heard them all 3 stations go off the air, from storms
KJIM AM Has generator but their electricly charged if Bob Allen The Station Owner If he didnt charge up the generators and if the power goes out the stations off the air i know 97.5 K-Lake FM has generators but their EAS Station Dont Serve Sherman Dension, There Serve Tom Bean Whitewright And Collin County,
Only KJIM is the emergency station for the area and they can stay on there past local sunset if there is a grave emergency and can stay on the air if he charged up the generators, if not whoops!
Have Often Wondered
During one super storm early in the summer I paid close attention to what our stations were doing for the St. Louis area.
550 AM, almost unhearable behind all the crackling static, kept shutting off and on at intervals of a few seconds, it sounded like rain water was shorting from the tower to ground in some way.
Never mind 590, 630, 690, 770, 850, 920 or 1010 AM. They all are skimpy cheap operations with no one in charge of storm information.
1120 is the only 50kW and does the best storm news, but they got squeezed by an ongoing sports broadcast which was heavily sponsored, so the storm information came in short segments. Also, their transmitter kept shutting down, maybe even their STL (studio transmitter link), but they did manage to pop back on.
None of the FMs are serious about real-time information.
Probably the idea of “information in an emergency” is a day dream, because the area is too large to accurately know what is happening or where it is happening. At least, however, some stations try.
Locally KJIM KQDR are really good local stations
Locally KJIM KQDR are really good local stations if there something going on KJIM Will Simulcast with WXK22 The National Weather Service Every hour on the hour, KQDR will get the information from the internet cut the music off and tell the announcement, and go back to programming wether it came from the EAS Decoder or the internet or KXII TV, so locally there are the best stations around. even during a grave emergency
The Sherman Locals
Concerning KMAD, If I’m not mistaken that one is sat fed for much of the time, and is co-owned with KMKT and KLAK.
I have heard KJIM stay on past sunset, and they seem like one of the ones to go for.
I didn’t know KQDR was on the ball, that’s unusual for a music FM station.
Interesting note about KJIM, I’m sure Bob (Bobbin’) Mark Allen keeps the generators charged.
All the DFW stations here are on generator back-up. Then again we are Market #5.
I hadn’t realized how bad off Sherman was. in DFW despite having more stations, we only have two stations to go to for weather, WBAP and KRLD.
Forget weather on FM, not gunna happen unless you tune to WBAP-FM.
I’m always on top of the weather, the moment the area goes into a warning all music stops, and I immediately flip the board to NOAA.
(I have a full time scanner with a direct hookup to the board.)
KMKT Is Satellitte Fed
KMKT is Satellitte Fed 98% of the time except for the morning drive hosted by Jason Taylor. (I know him, Great Guy) if something bads going on if he can make he will try to get there if he cant make it Jackie Van Zant (great Guy He’s like an older version of me of the same interests) who lives closer will take over kmkt and kmad. it just depends if they can get to the studio. its really a good thing for a small market like Sherman/Denison/Ada to do that. but i agree with you about dallas or any other major market you hardly HARDLY hear any official info only on WBAP AM and FM. for me i just find a radio station who still broadcasting on the air Locally KJIM KQDR are really good local station severe weather or official information if your in my neck of the woods
something is bound to happen
i dont know about you guys but something is bound to happen somewhere in the us, there was 2 earthquakes in colorado and virginia… i may be going intercontinental ballistic, but im not worried about it im just wondering the people i know how are they going to react.
