Got a super signal from WCCO Minneapolis, Minnesota, 830 kHz 50 kW, near 11 PM CDT, the host is a terrific personality, didn’t catch his name, who had an extraordinary raport with his callers. They spoke to him like it was a private family conversation. He knew all their data, like age, ailments, family members.
Then I checked 970 kHz, destined to be the future carrier current spot for KDX, and it was nice and clear.
Went down to 570 kHz, usually very clear, so I could wish to be there with CC, but there is only one guard band on either side, way too tight. Only tonight something interesting was coming in. A tick-tick-tick, like a clock, only none of the tones heard on WWV. But every few minutes two morse code figures:
dit-dash-dit dit-dash-dit. It was saying “R – R.” Where would that be coming from?

I hear it too and often here in Kentucky. That is Radio Reloj out of Cuba. They air news and the time as you observed during your dx’ing of the medium wave band. You may find Radio Reloj on 670 khz as well.

in my area i can never get WCCO am 830 probably because of the 50 kilowatt nuclear blowtorch station WBAP next door at 820 Kc

I can still hear WCCO/830 and Radio Reloj/570
on a regular basis here in Connecticut.
I have heard WBAP many times, but way in the
past. 820 is very crowded now. Way back decades
ago, in order to hear WBAP on 820, you had to
wait for a Chicago 50,000 watt daytimer to go off first.
I think that daytimer had the call WIAT, but I’m not sure.

DX in 2014
This thread goes back a few years. Now it’s 2014, February.
Somewhere I’ve already mentioned a station I hear from St. Louis that became “The Woman,” a format by (mostly) women and I guess intended for women.
1380 AM with 5kW day and (I think) 1kW night, decent reception… WHEN THEY’RE ON!
That’s an unusual thing about the station. It goes off the air a lot. The other morning their morning host was working her head off shuttling guests, listener calls, traffic, many topics, and the transmitter went off for 10-minutes.
It didn’t happen during the switch over from low to high power, that had already happened earlier.
Then in the evening they are apparently on remote control, the Rhandi Rhodes Show comes in by satellite, but when commercial break time comes along there might be one spot followed by 4-minutes of dead air. By then I forget about it and get scared when the program comes crashing back!
It’s the only station in the area that’s not sports or church, and I’m so hard up for something to hear that the mistakes are entertaining.
