I've been wondering for a little bit about EAS. I know that Part15 stations are excluded from the requirement, but I am interested in low cost, easy to install/program units. Any ideas? Will the old surplus units work? I'm just wanting it to break in over the audio, air the message, and then switch back...any one know for sure?
Check ebay or craiglist or other auction sites. There were quite a few TFT EAS 911 units being sold some months ago, recently purchased a SAGE unit all good to go to program my station's identifiers in the headers. It uses a regular AM radio to monitor the LP1 station and a plain ol weather radio to monitor NOAA.
Got it at a steal...36 bucks.

i may have an EAS made by burke with an lx4 breakout box. will check when i am at storage today and see if it is still there. it may have fell victim to a pawn shop run. will need to check. will swap to a External ATU for the THII or take $125.00 shipped conus if i still have it.
E.A.S. means Emergency Action System, unless I am wrong and it means something else.
But here's a new idea, a suggestion to have a S.E.A.S., a Special Emergency Action System, which would be part 15 size.
We see papers tacked to poles flapping in the breeze about lost pets.
Interrupt your disco and broadcast the lost dog emergency message, and start an area patrol using some kind of remote microphone to wander the neighborhood interviewing witnesses and calling the dog's name.
If the dog had gone rabid and attacks you, report this as a news story as you are being chewed.
Be sure to speak with the missing dog owners (the owners are not missing, that's the dog's place).
If you are a Fox News kind of station, imply that the neighbors did something to the dog and are pretended that it ran away.
