I was the only one available during the hurricanes of 2004. My wife had gone to Asheville, NC, to help with the arrival of grandson number 2.
At that time, I had the city, Red Cross, and other agencies simply keep me on the "media list." I had already been on it as operations manager of a local AM daytimer. I had them change the companies from my previous employer to my own. That way I could continue to receive the critical information. The AM was being LMAed by a group who thought a satellite receiver could be all things to all people. They had access to the info but did not plan to have anyone on site. They still don't.
I would rotate between giving out the information, then play a couple of songs while gathering the news items. Then I would go on air. At one point I did this for 11 hours straight. All the other AM stations were off the air except for one that was airing preachers.
Also, to clarify, I don't shut down during every storm. But our power does go out a lot, now, and usually takes me off the air. A UPS is on my wish list. If the lightning gets really close, though, I do shut down, usually for the hour or so when the lightning is worst. Been fried a time or two. I have surge protectors on everything now.
