It's not the neck that blocks traffic, it's higher up in the head and ears.

Human communications whether between actual persons or the radio station and listener requires solid two-way connections but our problem is that after milleniums of stagnant evolution we have one-way traffic...

We can either pay attention to what we hear or we can think about what we say, but cannot do both at the same time.

Every morning KDX schedules a half-hour of news so I can be brought up to date on what's going on, but during that same time I do most of my thinking for the day and miss most of the news.

Briefly I might tune in to hear how "sea level rise is threatening wildlife" and that flips me back to thinking about how stupid humans are (excluding me) for not solving the sea level problem during the last century when we saw it coming... then the rest of the newscast is lost in the air unheard behind my loud thoughts.

In person conversations are no different. Maybe I call an FCC agent to ask about long ground leads but while he's talking I'm thinking about throwing in a question about FM field strength and when the call's over I can at least blame the FCC for not explaining it clearly.
