This TEST was actually helpful at KDX where we examined the background noise being raised too much during pauses in speech, which we guessed was being caused by Audacity compression... but it wasn't...
What we discovered is that the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) in Stereo Tool, the audio processing software for our final output, was bringing up the background during pauses.
I had the same exact issue when I use to run SAM Broadcaster and used their AGC for Audio processing. How I cleared this up was to run the Rock setting and I did have to tweak the AGC controls a bit.
With Stereo Tool for FM I used Amsterdam I think it was. Breakaway was one and Stereo Tool was the other I messed with. One had Prestine and was under FM Broadcasting settings and the other had what was called Amsterdam and I used that and it was perfect for my setting. However AM requires the highes after about 5Khn to be cut off and the base boosted to compensate for the poor sound quality. I've found it takes a lot of tweaking to get AM to sound right.
You could use StreamWhatYouHear as the source and do an STL with an inactive Android smartphone and use Xiia to receive your stream. Then you can use the eualizr in Xiia. It does help with AM.
