is it possible to browse the internet and check email from a windows 3.11 connection? either dial up or broadband?

I'm board and staring at a pile of 486 and pentium laptops and my stack of 3.11 disks.

it would be neat to have an old laptop running 3.11 and internet.

I think the problem would be to find a suitable browser. I recall using 3.11 with a dial up modem and a simple terminal interface (similar to hyperterm) but I don't recall the name. There was a net called Fido that was fun but really primitive by today's standards.

You might consider running Win 98 on this machine and using a browser such as Firefox or Mozilla.

Here, I have some older machines and it is rather fun to put them on my network via Ethernet cards and PCAnyware. I have used them for data gathering with a NI A/D card. Works well for fooling around since all the slots on my "main" machine are full.

My son uses one as an always on weather station.

Still some good uses for dedicated older PCs.

There are several browsers that will work in Windows 3.11. One of them is Netscape Communicator Gold (this is actually a suite that includes e-mail too). The main problem you're going to have is that these older browsers won't handle CSS and XML properly (let alone Flash), so many web sites won't display properly. But if you can find a basic web site that uses plain HTML, it will work. And, you should be able to get your Win 3.11 machine to run on your LAN so you can browse at high speed.

Another possibility might be Opera, or even Internet Explorer 2, which was out at about that time. Don't expect any fancy results using these old browsers, but they will run. Let me know if you need help finding copies of them.

I have a Windows 3.11 machine, but I prefer to use a modern operating system on my older computers. Ubuntu Linux runs very well, and comes packed with good tools such as Firefox and OpenOffice. Another version of Linux that runs well on these older systems is PCLinuxOS. All of these are free to use. Just ask if you have any questions about these Linux operating systems.

You'll probably need a couple of things. First an appropriate Winsock ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winsock) and then a web browser. I would recommend on running Mosaic or Netscape Communicator.

I don't believe Windows 3.11 came with TCP/IP drivers by default and the Winsock is used to get around that.
