I am considering constructing a base loaded antenna for my SSTRAN tx. How would I go about getting power to it w/o using the wall wart plug?

Normally you would just splice the output of the wall wort into a heavy gage cable and run it up to the tranmitter.

Travis,

Greg's advice is good. I would just add that the wall wart that came with my SSTRAN has a thermal fuse. I found out the hard way that you don't want to short the power wires. Check your installation carefully or you will have a dead wart.

You could also use a POE (Power Over Ethernet) solution.

NOTE: I have not tried this yet but it's on my list of things to try.

What type of cable would I need? Would 18 gauge speaker wire do the job w/o any risks?

Depends on how long the run is. Anything over 50 feet and I would look into a heavier gauge, even 50 feet might be too long but if you have the wire it's worth a try.

If it's a long run outdoors be sure to use a wire assembly that includes a wire jacket over the insulated pair or the sun and weather will eat right through the primary insulation.

Also think about using stranded rather than solid core for better flexibilty and consider a shielded cable assembly to reduce extraenous noise.

POE uses standard Cat 5 or Cat 6e cabling lengths up to 100m.

We use it at work quite often for mounting remote IP cameras, wireless access points and etc.

I plan on running it about 30-35' away from my house. My 18 gauge sp. wire has the basic coating on it, and I plan using 22 gauge sp. wire for my audio as well.

ACK! No not speaker wire for the audio. You need shielded cable for that, no exceptions.

Thanks for the info. Greg_E. This may sound silly, but what type of shielded cable do I need so I can make my own.

You gotta use shielded cable! If nothing else, use a couple of RG-58 cables, one for audio and one for power. I am using some dual individual shielded pairs cable I pulled from my junkbox stock. The SSTrans wall wart is garbage, first one lasted about an hour, second one lasted 20 minutes! I am using a heavier duty wall wart from an old amplified pc speaker, its 20 volts DC at 1000ma! The transmitter really works better than it ever did with the supplied one,YMMV!

if you are having difficulty with a product. SSTRAN might have received some duds from their supplier and might like to know.

I already let Phil know and he replaced one already. It bit the dust too,not sure if it was a dud or if something in my environment is taking them out.
I am an active ham radio station and may be getting a bunch of rf into it(500 watts!)but the junkbox wall wart is holding up just fine!??!

It might be that they have some additional noise quieting circuitry inside and a bit more oomph in the smoothing section. I'm guessing that's to keep noise out of the audio amp and provide additional power for loud passages in the sound material being reproduced.

Hard to beat the price, too ๐Ÿ™‚
