I was at a free (get that?) outdoor concert here in Friday Harbor, put on by Island Rec (God bless'em), who managed to get NorthWest blues icon Alice Stuart (recently inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, waaay late if you ask me) to come and play at our Historical Museum Grounds "Music On The Lawn Summer Series". Alice was and is one of the stateswomen of blues artists ... today's female blues artists owe inspiration and a debt of gratitude to her, dating back before the likes of Melissa Ethridge and Bonnie Raitt. At least that's my take on it 😉
Fabulous concert! The woman makes wherever she plays feel like your own living room. At the break, I walked up and asked if it'd be OK to air her stuff on my micro radio station (including the internet) and handed her my card. She said, "How cute! I love that ... Naw, we'd just hate it if you play our music!" ...then laughed, gave me a big hug and said "Darlin', you play it whenever and wherever you want!"
We chatted a bit more, then I got a call and had to go pickup a fare in my taxi (gotta 'work', still trying to get more support for my station), managed to make it back for the last two songs in the last set.
Gotta love radio ... I mean ... I wanna know ... how does it get any better than that? !! 😉
I'm not sure I should start a barage of OT stuff like this here, but, hey, I'd like to hear YOUR stories ...
Hey Ken Norris... WAY TO GO!
That is a beautiful example of how part15/online radio can provide an instant bridge for a performance situation.
So far I have used e-mail to solicit permissions from program producers. Probably 90% give permission gladly, just like your experience. Two producers have written back to deny permission, and two have simply failed to respond.
In the future I plan to print business cards for the radio station to hand out in public to attract listeners and fortify permission requests. Also a good CD sample of the station would be good to hand out.
Somebody once told me I should walk a dog to attract women for introduction, but sometimes having a radio station might be good too. Except that it's hard to walk a part 15 station on a leash. Point is, in that situation, how to bring it up? "Hi! I have a radio station!" Ideas welcome.
Especially if you're streaming or saving podcasts 🙂
All we need is the van in the back of the parking lot...
The "F" truck, as Don Geronimo called it 🙂
SCWIS, do you mean "Fire Truck?"
parked between the "E" truck and the "G" truck...
