i now scored a free wheatstone A-50 console. it's in need of a little TLC but i have seen much worse than this one.
i have solicited on various broadcast email listserv's for parts to bring this console back to it's original glory.
i have attached a JPG from the wheatstone website. mine is the 12ch.
this is an 80's / 90's vintage board

Awesome! I have a 1979 Broadcast Electronics 8S250 waiting to be put into service.
I think that is the same board that the station Ken used in the video Hunting Down a Pirate. Cool board. Love his demo of that board in the video and how he was able to air live bands with that very same board. It looked nice in his basement.
up and running. just need to acquire bulbs for the on/off switches, screws to hold down the modules, and one bad switch that need a new one soldered in place.
also need to clean up the board cosmetically a little.
typical sticker residue BS. Grrr!!!!
You just reminded me that we have a fully functioning R-16 at the full power in the production room. Looks nearly identical to yours. Still an amazing sounding board. I believe it was the main board until 2006.
That looks great!
Part15engineer, you're lucky! I can't find a damned console anywhere that is on my side of the world and has the ability to work with magnetic type phono cartridge turntables.
Every damned mixer I see on ebay that's worth a damn is either beat to crap or and expensive as hell, or the seller refuses to ship the damned thing. i.e. PICK UP ONLY.
I am NOT about to travel from Connecticut all the way to California or Washington State to pick up a $25,000 used console!
I am not looking for a unit that works best at a rock concert and that is the bulk of what is out there that isn't beat to crap. I guess NO ONE in the north east wants to sell a decent console that works well with turntables. I need one that accepts phono capabilities, not just line inputs.
I gave up on my Behringer VMX1000 5 channel mixer, there is something that does not seem right with that mixer.
I have converted back to my Radio Shack 5 channel mixer for the time being because I believe the phono input pre-amps work better with my cartridges, plus the mixer has inputs for both magnetic or ceramic types where the behringer VMX1000 only has one type of input for phono, who is to say those inputs work well with magnetic cartridges, the owner's manual really does not say what type of cartridge the inputs work best with.
Been looking for 4 years now for a decent mixing board and it appears, it will be another 5 looking for one I can get my hands on that does what I want it to do.
I guess people in New England are hoarders and don't like selling their broadcast equipment.
Bruce.
if i were to sell this one it would be arounf $1500.00 and i would ship and do have a box of spare parts. i am on the fence about selling it though. i need the $$$ but don't really want to sell it.
i MAy decide to sell my Broadcast tools pro mix 12 for $800.00. i have CD and manual for it.
Any serious radio station console I've seen uses external magnetic phono preamps, though I'm betting there are add-in cards for mag phono that could be added to select channels.
A disco mixer can work if you don't want to have equipment sprawling all over your studio. If your RF environment is high you can treat the mixer's inputs with ferrite beads and shielding.
a couple broadcast grade phono preamps i would ship with either console, whichever one i decide to sell.
Okay I would be interested, however, I am currently dealing with the death of my live-in girlfriend and co-financial supporter. She died on May 27th unexpectedly, so things have been a bit tough for me the last 7 or so days, of course that also explains my lack of participation here at part15.us.
I would like a console but have to watch my budget for the immediate future since I lost that extra income in my budget each month.
I know, it would be most likely that someone, who can throw in the cash now, would beat me out of the possibility.
I have to watch out for myself, so I don't go into debt, but I can start saving up once I get other obligations out of the way first.
If you can wait till then and offer a working console without me breaking the bank of purchase and refurbishing costs, I can work out a deal.
My studio does look kind of cheesy with that Radio Shack CAT# 32-1101A 5 channel mixer sitting on the desk, two of those channels are for microphones only though, then there is two phonograph channels and one whatever channel for tape or cd etc..
Bruce.
of knowing which i am going to sell, if i even sell any.
i may run the A50 and keep the promix as a backup.
As is to be expected.
I realize, I am not going to find what I need on this side of the globe.
It appears to me that radio stations in the North-East USA hoard all of their equipment. I can only imagine what their storage rooms look like!
Ebay is a lost cause, either the mixers are non-functioning, in very poor condition or the seller refuses to ship the unit and are on the West Coast of the USA somewhere. I am not driving all the way to California or Washington State for a $25,000 mixer in poor shape, missing knobs, missing cards, burnt light bulbs, scratches, dents, broken this, broken that etc. etc.
Best of luck to you "part 15 engineer" glad to see you got yours for free. You can't beat that!
Bruce.
