i have a sage EAS ENDEC the older grey faced one.
it has been working fine for 4 years and now all of a sudden (within the last couple months maybe) i noticed it hasn't been relaying RWT and RMT or any other alerts.
i checked the recieved audio via the EAS ENDEC itself, so the audio is making it into the EAS but the eas is not relaying alerts and tests.
i did a ROM self test and everything appears to work.
not sure what would cause it to all of a sudden quit just recently.
has there been any recent changes to EAS implemented that would cause this?
That was one of the things I was going to suggest that maybe the data bursts or code has changed for your area. It may be that you'll have to check that. Or maybe they're sending the wrong data for your area. Is there a button to press to see if the unit receives any static or anything on the frequency sort of like what the doctors could do to their pagers back in the early days to be sue its actually receiving a signal?
It's possible that the station you are monitoring is not sending them! Historically, over the last 4 decades in the biz, there have been situations where the stations that you monitor are not sending proper tests for some reason. Perhaps their unit is on the fritz and out for repairs, or has developed a software problem. Some stations set up the new units to send the tests automatically, and sometimes this quits working. The reasons are nearly countless as to why a test may not be sent. Don't know if you're in a position to call the originating station and check, or call one of the others down the line and see if they are receiving them?
Every state has their own EAS system and it can differ greatly from state to state, so I can't give you any specific suggestions. The whole she-bang is handled by Minnesota Public Radio here. So if there had been any changes the only people who would know would be those in your state.
But there have been many instances in my life where an initiating station had stopped sending, sometimes unbeknownst to them.
I imagine you already have downloaded the state EAS plan and related documents for your state? Might be some info there.
Our box was on the fritz several years ago, and even though we're the "end of the line" (no one officially monitors US for their EAS) after a few weeks we got a call from a cable TV system that WAS monitoring us and noticed we hadn't sent one for a while. We had no idea they were listening, and again, we were not their official monitoring station.

How many stations are you monitoring? You could temporarily try a couple different strong stations for long enough to grab either a RWT or RMT (even though they wouldn't be authorized by your state's EAS coordinator).
i'm in jefferson co colorado
kygo 98.5 is our LP-1
i also monitor 162.550 WX
and koa 850 is the LP-2 but that station is completely wiped out here by some kind of hash, well medium wave and HF are all flooded with a buzzing sound for the last few months.
already wrapped an am radio in tin foil tunred the sensitivity down and waled around the apartment and we have nothing here causing the buzz.
almost sounds like a high powered flourecent light or grow light.
but i have good audio from kygo and nws when monitoring on both the EAS box or the receiver deck.
running an older SAGE EAS (Grey Box not blue) using a Dayton AFC-3 RX deck using outdoor antenna's
I can assure you nothing new has been put into use yet for EAS units. I want to say in 2016 they are adding a new code or two however.
I'd call KYGO to see if there is a problem.
Is there anything in the MSG log? Remember EAS units to not rebroadcast tests, so if the sending station properly codes for a test the box will not rebroadcast. The test will however typically show up in the MSG log.
In a fun factoid, the primary source of alerts will come from a NOAA weather channel in rural areas. Unless KYGO has a weather staff that issues warnings. (Where I am the LP1 has never issued an alert, they all come from the WX station; However in nearby DFW ALL alerts come from WBAP.)
must have been an issue with kygo, came home this evening and seen "msg" on the unit and there was a notification of a recieved "rwt" so i guess it is still functioning.
also picked up a dsp1400p ultramizer and another dsp9024 with v1.3a firmware to replace my blown up dsp9024 and the interim software based porcessing running on windows.
I thought you were selling all your stuff? getting out of the radio business. Needed money bla bla bla....
i was and i did, thanks to boehner's last parting gift to the democrats (proving he is not the collosal douche i once thought he was) the 20% SSDI cut is staved off for at least a couple more years and i made enough to get ahead of the bills again.
as long as no more disasters hit, i should be ok financially for a couple more years.
i have schizoaffective disorder, ptsd, add, and i fly into total panic meltdown mode quite easily these days.
Feelings of panic are like getting an EAS (Emergency Activation Spark) inside the head.
High winds do it for me after living under a gigantic 40-foot oak tree for 25-years which I was convinced would come down through the roof during severe wind storms and crush me, ending my days at part15(dot)us.
That tree was finally removed a year ago but the panic is back because I found a 35-foot dead elm which might fall against a neighbors house killing them all, so last night with sustained 40-mph winds I stayed up after midnight thinking that staying awake would postpone the inevitable.
Now that tree is scheduled for removal and the tree men in their bucket elevators will seem like saviors from the church of the sky.
There was one question in a recent city questionaire that had the right answer at that moment... "Living here in this town do you feel A.) Safe; B.) Unsafe; C.) Neither safe nor unsafe."
I checked "C", but things can change with the wind.
Hey Carl, Long time no talk, i have the newer blue faced sage left over from my part 15 i orginially ran from 2007-2014 but i am going to start up another part 15 operation during my free time working as an local engineer and AOM, but i need to take care of some person using my call sign and brand which i had copyrighted... but on the sage unit, i had a similar issue, but it really came down to the opearting system of the sage unit, i wasn't getting any CAP Alerts on the Sage Endec, during my part 15 operation i had to monitor
WBAP AM 820 LP1
KXII VHF 12.1 LP2
WXK22 162.4750 NWS
however my issue was i wasn't getting any alert the radios and converter box were hooked up correctly, stations were sending test but it was my unit, however since you have the older grey faced sage and since i have the blue faced sage, i don't know if you will get any help with your endec, but let me see if i can find out anything for youbut
i disconnected and turned off the port KOA was on and just run WX/Aux and KYGO and my alerts are working fine now. it seems it was staying lokced on the KOA port due to the massive QRM in the RX signal which i could never track down. interference to koa is coming from the building but notthing inside my apartment. it has to be another apartment in the building. maybe someone has a micro grow operation in their apartment.
AFAIK KXII makes a LOUSY EAS monitor (really any TV station doesn't do EAS in a way thats good with radio). Not to mention I have an extreme distate for KXII and their extremely subpar weather coverage and forecasts.
Of Course me and ABMedia are in the unique position of being in the northern and western fringes of the states EAS plans. (His assigned LP stations are WBAP and KSCS.)
I had to apply for a waiver at the full power AM Station.
Our Assigned stations were: LP1 KOYN 93.9, LP2 KPLT 107.7, and the Paris, TX NOAA station. Naturally the NOAA station doesn't come in well, and both the LP1 and LP2 get swamped with any kind of tropo thanks to adjacents from nearby DFW.
That being said, I sucessfully got a waiver for the LP1 to be KFYN-FM 104.3, WBAP 820 as the LP2, and for the NOAA monitor to be WXK22. Without that waiver the EAS box was pretty much an expensive brick.
I'd be curious about KQDR's assigned stations, considering the station is legally in Savoy which is in Fannin County but completely ignores this and serves Sherman-Denison. (KPLT & KOYN LP)
For my Part 15 side of things, I have a SAM HU-961, which not only is severely outdated but was also considered junk even when it was new. It is not hooked up.
DASDEC II at our LPFM. Very nice. Easy to set up.
i can not say of kqdr monitors due to policy which prohibits me from saying so and no one at the station can, but all i can say is that was my part 15 monitors, i monitored kxii because of their connection to state alerts from ONN an TSN... WBAP because of PEP and national weather service for weather alerts...
and for me working on part 15 things and a full power station, i would like for that to be kept quiet if you would not mind
