Howdy,
Tho't y'all might like to view this:

Can you elaborate on that?
I was not able to bring up that article.
Interestingly, I actually heard a PSA on
one of the local AM stations here. It
was a plug for broadcasting in general.
It said that radio and television
broadcasting is still important to people,
especially during times of emergency.
I beleive the part about "times of emergency."
When the Boston bombings happened, we
received a phone call from my son. He
just happened to be in Boston - and -
he just happened to be about a mile
away from the bombings.
Part way into the phone conversation,
the line went dead - we lost his call.
You can imagine that we were quite
concerned - not knowing the situation
and the scope of it. We iimmediately
put on the local CBS-TV affiliate, and
our local 50 kW station - WTIC 1080.
About an hour later we received a
text from my son on my wife's cell
phone. Our son reported that he
was OK, and he explaned what was
going on. That made us feel better,
but listening to the local broadcasters
helped a great deal, too.
I wonder if that high percentage
is because of the zillions of people
that listen to the radio in their cars
on the way to work in the morning.
And also on the way home - some of
them anyway. I don't think afternoon
drive gets as many listeners as morning
drive. Yhat percentage still seems high
to me. Can you shed some light on
that Carl?

now.)
Hi Bruce:
It was Ken Norris that posted "Radio Is Still Viable", but thanks for giving me credit for it.
Good question whether more people listen to morning as compared to afternoon.
I truly do not know.
But I think most morning formats are way too full of detailed clutter, when most people have personal business on their mind in the morning and don't really have time to ingest the flood of information some stations pour at them.
Afternoon formats seem to be more relaxed by comparison, and that would be my choice if I had time to listen, but I'm still too busy even for that.
Most people I see driving are on the cell phone, so I don't think the radio is turned on.
Carl
is so so so far away from what I
would listen to - it's almost baffling.
I think what she listens to is utter garbage,
with one exception - the people involved in
the show do a lot of good charity work.
And I have heard the show. When
I am not sick to my stomach sometimes I
hear them talking. I beleive that they really are doing
work for charities and it is not a scam. I can be
very very cynical - but in this situation I do REALLY
beleive that these idiots have a good side, and
they are trying to help other people.
I hate the programming though. But my
wife is a great wife and mother to our kids,
so if she wants to listen to this drivel - well -
she works so hard, I figure she can do whatever
makes her happy. And if a "morning zoo show
playing only 4 teeny bopper songs over and over"
makes her happy, then so be it.
I'll just ride in the trunk of the car.
Well, no - not really. But I sure WANT TO
when that show is on and I'm there.
(Oh yeah - judging from all of the phone
calls this show gets - there are lots of
people out there tuning in. So radio is
still "valid," at least in this case. It's just
that it's also @#$%^&*&^%$#@!!!!!!!??????)

A station here in this market just switched formats from all sports, which dates back to about 1780, when America was first begun, and now its slogan is "The Woman".
I was very curious to hear how a station format could appeal to women, although I guess the sports format probably was mostly males, but what I hear is like a non-stop edition of Saturday Night Live in which women talk over each other and act all floozy, going on about eye lashes, nails, a slight bit of male bashing, and the show has a few male staff members, but they are dweeb milktoast types, who try to get a word in and get put down like "outsiders".
If Disney Radio attracts children, which I doubt, because children aren't stupid, then "The Woman" might attract 8th grade girls.
But it's better than sports.

"1380 The Woman" is the station I talked about above, and just next to it is a station I will talk about now.
1430 is a very old local station that presently runs a 24-hour "Music You Went to High School With" format, which is probably very popular. If it had disc jockies I would pick a favorite one and listen myself. For decades the station has been 5kW day and night, but they got a CP (Construction Permit) to increase daytime power to 50kW.
They must have a great engineer because the switch to 50kW is already done and the CP isn't that old.
Tonight I watched the 50kW peak from 1430 on my spectrum analyzer while also listening on a radio. At 8 PM the signal turned off and the peak on the screen dropped to nothing. A few seconds later the 5kW transmitter came on, and on the radio it was pretty much the same level, but on the spectrum analyzer the peak was a lot lower.
Now I've done it all.
