Now, don't call me cheap, but does anyone have any ideas for a make shift desktop microphone stand until I can actually afford one?
Thanks!
Geoff
Geoff, I suppose something could be figured out. What kind of mic do you have? Do you already have a shock mount or holder for it?
If you were to happen to find a piece of pipe laying around that already has threads to fit, than something could be easily be constructed.
If you don't already have some kind of holder, something could still be configured.
What kind of mic is it you have?
I understand being broke, believe me! But currently, how broke is broke?.. I bought this nice cast iron desk mic stand for $10 with free shipping: http://cgi.ebay.com/Musicians-Gear-Low-Profile-Die-Cast-Mic-Stand_W0QQitemZ190502657338
How about:

$7 is less than you'd have to pay for pipe nipple extensions and a flange at the hardware store. Take up a collection, look in the couch for change, etc.
HTH ...
For 2 years I was using the ultimate poor mans mic stand.
It just so happens the studio is located next to the TV stand (those big armwa's I have no idea how to spell that)
all I used was a ruler, some electrical tape, and old car speakers.
The mic was taped to the ruler using the tape, and the speakers kept the darn thing from falling down. (infact they are the only thing that kept it up.) Worked well.
In the grade school years a buddy and I lived on the same block as a 1kw radio studio, where we hung out watching the three operators including and engineer, an announcer and a turntable operator. This was so interesting to us that we set up a phonograph, got a stack of 78-rpm records, and built a mic stand as follows.
A floor lamp was the main support, somehow we tied a broom handle at the top so it extended over a desk, and hanging from this was an empty dog food can. Our antenna was a circular coil space heater with a missing ac cord.
We did announcements and played the records.
That is a riot. Blowtorch radio! It might set off the EAS
It might set off the EAS
Or I could get a NOUO and NAL issued for exceeding the use of fire. ๐

Woohoo! So how far did it get?
The coil space heater antenna got as far as our imagination. Pretty far!

I think that the dead giveaway to that setup was the empty dog food can for a microphone! ๐
