Don't know how much power they had or the transmitter...that would be interesting.
This seems to be a regular thing in the US where in Canada you don't really hear of much of this.

It's election time so they will show their oats for right now. Butt I assure you they might have won the battle but they won't win the war.
pirates have always been a problem out there and will continue. it's like whack a mole. they knock down a bunch and there is more to immediately take their place.
Yup they tried the same play Daddy concept with File Sharing since 2003. where did that get them? This is why I am so adamant about 87.7 + 87.9 megahertz. That and at LEAST 500mW. but let them learn the hard way because history keeps repeating itself.
Just like the war on drugs.

Does anyone subscribe to the spectrum monitor? The June 2016 issue has an article that talks about the NYC/NJ pirates.
@ Thelegacy, there is not room in the greater NYC area for more on the FM dial. If there was open space we would have seen AM stations aggressively moving translators into NYC or trying to rim-shot NYC during the first 250 mile translator move window. 87.7 and 87.9 are off limits in NYC; the service contour for full power DTV station WPVI on RF channel 6 (82-88MHz) reaches Staten Island.
I was just looking at the NOUOs for this area two days ago, wondering what was going to be done about these guys. The article does NOT mention the pirates I mentioned here a few months back, so if I were them, I'd just close up shop. In fact...(runs to car)...yup the two other big pirate stations in my area are still running.
EDIT: stvcmty - 95.9 can be used in some areas.
Thanks macdev, I don’t live in the greater NYC area, so all I can do is look at coverage maps, FM fool, the FCC database, and make some educated guesses. It looks like WFOX covers most of long island on 95.9 for a determined listener. Brooklyn, Staten Island, and most of Midtown Manhattan may be open on 95.9.
WPLJ (95.5) is IBOC HD so Part 15 on 95.9 could interfere with the HD sideband which an overly zealous field agent may cited as a violation of 15.5. Still 95.9 may work in some areas around NYC.
