This is one cold day in hell.

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/08/14/david-gilmour-pink-floyd-actually-finished

Just as many fans had suspected, Pink Floyd is officially over. David Gilmour confirmed that the band would not reunite in the coming years, and that last year’s The Endless River, their first record since 1994’s The Division Bell, would be their last.

“I’m done with it. I’ve had 48 years in Pink Floyd – quite a few of those years at the beginning, with Roger (Waters),” he said in a cover story interview with Classic Rock magazine. “And those years in what is now considered to be our heyday were 95 percent musically fulfilling and joyous and full of fun and laughter. And I certainly don’t want to let the other five percent color my view of what was a long and fantastic time together. But it has run its course, we are done – and it would be fakery to go back and do it again.”

Gilmour’s most recent statements echo similar ones he made last year. “This is the last thing that’ll be out from us,” he told the BBC after the release of The Endless River.

Now in Classic Rock he added that playing without Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, who died in 2008, “would just be wrong.” (Founding frontman Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968, died in 2006.)

“I absolutely don’t want to go back. I don’t want to go and play stadiums… under the [Pink Floyd] banner,” Gilmour added. “I’m free to do exactly what I want to do and how I want to do it. Obviously I accept there are people who want to go and see and hear this legend that was Pink Floyd, but I’m afraid that’s not my responsibility.”

Gilmour’s solo album, Rattle That Lock,is due due out Sept. 18.

Atrain, it sounds pretty final. But David Gilmour talked about "doing whatever he wants" in the future.

Use your position as a radio fan to show Mr. Gilmour his future as a Part 15 hobbyist and member of the ALPB.

You never know.  Joe Walsh is a Ham Radio operator and on the end of one of his songs it says in CW Vote For Me.  I can see Joe run a part 15 station. Maybe he can get the FCC to increase the field strength.  But really as Pink Floyd goes we'll really miss them.  I'll have to get their latest album and get David Gilmore's latest as well.  It will continue to help my Album Rock station to continue to expand.

I got to thinking about this Pink Floyd situation, where the existence of the musical group is tied to distinct personalities.

The Beatles were a very obvious example of a group that disappeared as the members drifted apart, for various reasons.

It's not a recent situation, there are groups from over one-hundred years ago that were at the heights of stardom in public concerts, on radio and recordings, until key people fell away and the groups dissolved.

Some attempts were made to extend the life of a popular band, such as Ray McKinley being appointed to lead the reassembled Glenn Miller Orchestra after Miller was lost without trace in a military plane. But the revived orchestra dropped off in the 60s and McKinley died in the 90s.

Unlike large symphonic orchestras, which exist perpetually, the musical ensembles that tend to have limited lives are based around original songs and styles produced by their musicians, whereas symphonys play from the wealth of composed music available to all established orchestras.

It's interesting to sort through all of it.
