problem comcast installed docsis3.0 modem now firefox but not internet explorer reverts to comcast captive portal with a 404 error.
than after a little while it clears up then i close browser and it shows back up.
when i first installed modem i had to install their software. i uninstalled software and everything was fine until next reboot.
there must be something left somewhere on my drive or in my files messing with firefox.
i hope the FCC soon makes it illegal for them to do that kind of stuff like requiring you to install software to use their service.
I agree..there should not be any reason why you have to install some special software just to make a modem for cable or dsl to work. Those are simply WAN to LAN interfaces and usually are simple plug and play units.
Then again...what better way to monitor and track what your doing via some hidden back door within that software running in the background.

Just like purchasing a new PC (not Mac) which comes with a lot of proprietary junk files from deals the distributers make with off-brand sellers .. slows a brand new machine down to actual operating speeds worse than the old machine.
Get PC DeCrapifier:

... and get rid of the junk software, try your best to keep your machine clean.
I clean all my machines every week around midnite Sunday nite. MacKeeper usually shows around 40-50 junk files to clean out, the little netbook running Windows 7, usually about 1500 junk files to clean out.
Indeed. That program can help a great deal for those not familiar with manual intervention and cleanup of excess junk.
I heard that Windows 8 is on the horizon. How ironic. Windows 7 is still new, still somewhat buggy and not quite ironed out.
Who's gonna jump on the early bird bandwagon and go through all that grief again?!!
Moral...if it still works...don't fix it. If it's old but still works, why replace it. If all else fails, start over again and don't go past GO!

called comcast last night had them do a roll and reprovision of modem. seems to have solved the issue. doing nearly 7m up and 30m down
I agree 100% with the comment that if it works, don't 'fix' it. I still run Windows 2000 for my production server. It's fast (I'm going to run out of bandwidth before I run out of CPU to support users, plus that particular computer also does the automation, encoding and audio processing as well), reliable (I reboot once a month, not because I have to, but just to reset everything, including logs [and see below]), still largely supported (only not by Microsoft, mainly because they want you to move to their new software) and quite inexpensive.
Ironically, when I was running Windows Media Server, my server could run for months. I moved over to Icecast (the open source software that's supposedly better because it's not proprietary) and it's not so stable anymore (which is why I reboot every month, eventually it will crap out otherwise).
I have other computers running XP, Vista and Windows 7, of course, as well as Windows Server 2003 (essentially the XP version), but I have no intention of moving off Windows 2000 for production use, at least until I'm forced to.
