I'll research those hosts and should have the links here in a few days.

I've finally gotten around to setting up postimage.org. Let's see if it works! I'm starting out with a photo of this week's experiment: a full wave vertical wire inside a 10' PVC pipe, with the CC Crane wrapped in stretch-wrap at the bottom, and, the whole kludge strapped with hose clamps to three L-brackets that are mounted to three large magnets, and, clapped down on to my room air conditioner. This seems to have bought me another 50 feet in the neighborhood, about 200' total range now. I'm getting a useable signal out to approximately 20 houses around my intersection. That's about 50 mailing addresses as several houses here are converted to apartments. I will run this for now, but will probably wind up going AM as I would like another 200 to 300 feet, to provide car radio coverage of the nearby train station where they have a Farmer's Market, and, possibly, also to the local supermarket parking lot as well. 800' - 900' feet would do it for me. I will be ordering a crystal to convert one of my Ramsey AM-1 units for that. Anyhow, here's my first attempt at a photo link...  http://postimg.org/image/bitli6q7z/

Ok here is my CC Crane, V1, No modulation, viewed on an RTL-SDR setup, with the default SDRSharp software. I'm not real happy with what I see, but may be going A. M. Any way, so, we'll see. Greetings to all & a Happy Easter Weekend! ...  http://postimg.org/image/nw53qidkv/

The spectrum graph pics look fine as far as I can tell, Signal Guy.

What is there not to like about them?

I just would prefer those spikes out at 100 KHz to be a few dB lower. Not that they mean much at these power levels, and, with the band so noisy.

Crazy things can happen with RF... you may quote me on that... and I'm wondering whether the C.Crane's transmission antenna might be receiving and re-transmitting strong RF that happens to exist in your vicinity from some other source, like a nearby computer, clock, or a more regional source like a nearby radio station?

Other than that I suspect Neil might have the right answer, suspecting a "free running" artifact caused by having removed the stereo crystal.

I'm looking at my C.Crane FM2 on a spectrum analyzer and observe no spikes at all outside of the main carrier.

Good point. The final stage of a transmitter can act as a mixer when another strong signal is coming back in from the antenna. In that case, I should see a change in the ratio between those spikes and the main carrier if I operate it with a dummy load and rig a shielded tap to the dongle, eliminating both antennas. I also have another, unmodified CC Crane I could try. Looks like I will have some more experimenting to do when there is time! Maybe dropping down to A. M. band is the wiser choice. I'd like to try crystal controlling a pair of Ramsey AM-1 units I have, and replacing their modulators with a modulation transformer.

This photo shows the output of another old model CC Crane that has not been modded yet, other than removing the whip antenna completely and soldering in a very short piece of jumper wire ending in an alligator clip. I also unscrewed the antenna connector from the RTL-SDR dongle, and laid the alligator clip directly on top of the connector. these two steps as an attempt at reducing any mixing with any ambient R.F. in the apartment. the result is quite different, though my impressions are similar. I think I'll be building something this year to eventually phase out my CC Cranes, but, no hurry I guess.

Hope you are all doing well, There's a lot going on in my life, and , I havent had time to drop by. I have done some limited tinkering on my Part 15 setup, antennaes, locations, etc, but I havent been able to push the CC Cranes beyond about 180'. Those of you that have the time, and, interest, can pull up a map of Telford, Pa, 18969, and, easily locate N. Main St, AKA County Line Road. You will also easily locate the Landis Supermarket, nearby, to the northwest, and, the Telford train station to the south east. This is an area I would like to cover, about 1/4 mile to the northwest, and, about 500' to the southeast. I am considering trying to save up for an AMT5000, but have a tech question: I'm in an Apt, and will not have the benefit of an earth ground. I am also on the first floor. As I read the rules, I currently perceive that if I run a radiating ground (counterpoise), it counts as part of the antenna length. My question: if I run a carefully loaded dipole, no ground, with the AMT5000, an MP3 player, and, a power source at the center of the dipole, can I expect to get the 1/4 mile coverage to the northwest? Or, should I just scratch this itch with a $54. Sainsonic 0.5w FM transmitter, and get involved with "the initiative" ? ... BTW: there is a VERY professionally operated "Part 15" guy operating in this area, who is getting SEVERAL MILES on 1620 AM, using callsign WNAR. Has web site, Don't know what he is using, but I expect maybe those pricey "synchronized" transmitters. He's been up for years with no complaints, and covers all of Telford, Franconia, and, much of Lansdale. VERY nicely done. He programs vintage radio shows.

Dude get involved with the initiative and I will give you Elite access so you can see the private stuff there. I think you will like it and enjoy it and it will benefit you very much.

I picked up 4 these from ebay a few weeks past.  One had a broken antenna mount which was repaired with gorilla glue.  All had been turned up.  I think the listing said they were used in a gym to transmit tv audio to users.    Less than 40 bucks in all 4 pieces.  One power supply was missing.

I use one of them here at work as a station monitor.  I compare it to the AM transmission to see what tweaking I need to do on occasion.  I feed both the AM and FM transmitters from an old Tascam M-06ST I had stashed years ago.  Pushing the bass to get the AM to sound better can cause the FM signal to be overdriven with low end audio (distorts the signal on bass notes).  I have to keep it at a happy medium.

The Crane Xmitter sounds pretty good on my old Zenith Circle of Sound Radio here in the office.

I use another one of the Crane Xmitters at home to rebroadcast an AM station out of Dallas via internet link.  I lose their signal after dark, so I re transmit it via internet to the Crane.

All this to say, that even with the units turned up, the coverage is still pretty poor with all the units purchased.  I haven't experimented with an outside antenna.  Some days, i figure I am pushing my luck with the AM stuff, though I have done my best to keep it legal.

You really do get what you pay for, I can almost guarantee WNAR is running Rangemasters.

With your location and setup expect coverage to top out anywhere around 200-700 feet. The signal will be directional, the lack of proper RF ground paired with a wire antenna against a wall is going to dramatically reduce your potential coverage.

Contact him via email and he will be happy to advise you.  He is also a broadcast engineer who does not generally participate in groups.  Who can blame him. He does run Rangemasters.

FROM HIS SITE:

WNAR Operates on 1620 KHz. using three Hamilton PCB Design Model AM1000 Transmitters in Lansdale Pennsylvania.

WNAR-AM also has a remote transmitter located at Tylersport, Pennsylvania.

The combined service area from both transmitter locations is about 10 square miles

Thanks for all input / info. I'm thinking the following: use the two windows, one facing Northwest, one facing southeast. Put an air conditioner in each and treat them as a 2' ground each. Put an 8' vertical with integral 100 mw transmitter pod on magnetic mount on each. Feed each local free running transmit oscillator by cat5 cable from a single quartz oscillator @ say, 1590 KHz, adjust them to sync up like an old analog TV sweep oscillator would. Feed each transmitter from a common audio source. Obviously, some tweaking required, but, that's part of the fun. If I can get that 700 feet mentioned, I'd be doing a lot better than I am right now with the CC Cranes. What say ye all? Poor man's synched transmitters?
