Well, the server was bogged yet again this morning. Response from tech support is better than most, but the fix is usually outside of what I'd like to see. The idea here is that they get us to switch from shared to dedicated hosting.
For the price of dedicated hosting, we could house our own servers (yes, 2) if we wanted to at the San Francisco Community Colo project.
I'm shooting for a goal to raise the funds needed to host 1 box at 50.00 / month at the SFCCP for 18 months. This will give us the opportunity to try and create other revenue streams for the colo box (Web hosting without popups, email accounts, domain hosting, jabber/chat hosting, perhaps limited streaming services)
These things would all benefit us as Part15'ers. I absolutely *hate* asking for money for this stuff, but I;d rather do that than watch it suffer along with the current hosting solution.
Goal: $900.00 USD
Current: $736.00 USD
Balance required: $154.00 USD
Paypal: r:collet:AT:g:mail.:com (remove colons, replace AT with @) - sorry for this, but sheesh, the spam crawlers are EVIL
Snail Mail: Email the above address for my current mailing address.
The numbers mlr posted look encouraging. Just a little bit to go.
The current service is very much substandard and we are close to the goal.
Consider funding a day $1.62
A week $11.54
A month $50.00
Or more.....
Let's put some shine on this site and give it the hosting it deserves!

I've been with DreamHost for a couple years now and have never had my sites run this slow. Are you on a shared or dedicated server? I'd ask for a transfer to galaga if you're on a shared. I have several sites there and have been pretty happy. At least they've been honest when there has been an outage of some sort.
On the other hand...I think you're on the right track going for the colo. I would donate to the cause, but money is REAL tight at the moment. 🙁
Good luck!
Chris
EDIT: It turns out every site I visited after yours was running slow. I had a process eating up most of my CPU resources. Your site seems to be running pretty well now! 🙂
I'm happy to support the site and will be sending a contribution. However, I have to say that I really haven't noticed many occasions where the server was slow! There were a few incidents, which others also reported, but in general it's worked fine for me.
If you paid for the service, why not try to get your money's worth rather than abandoning them? On the other hand, if you do want to switch, my own sites are with 1&1 and they've been super good (and reasonably priced too).
WEAK-AM
Classical Music and More!
The holiday season, the running-the-heater season and the *%@!% gas prices really have me by the throat but it would sure be nice to throw a few more dollars at getting a faster host.
Then I thought to myself "I can't afford to send much money, but I could do a little bending and stooping."
My idea - clean the closet for part15.us
I have a bunch of odds and ends from my various low power radio projects that I'll probably never use again. The stuff I'm thinking of would probably sell on ebay if I ever took the time to list it, but it wouldn't bring in much money so I keep putting it off.
While doing a little research on the best way to sell off my cast-offs, I found this article, stored as a PDF file, that indicates the "best" eBay selling price is $24.95
That gave me the idea to put together some ebay listings of items or groups of items that I would be delighted to sell for $20.00-$30.00 or so. Nothing I might use, just the stuff I really don't think I'll have any use for in the reasonable future. Why should some little pile of goodies like the Amidon toriods I bought for a circuit I never built, or the breadboards I don't use anymore because I can't see that well, or whatever, sit in my closet when someone could be using them?
The fundrasinig part is that instead of drawing the paypal payment to my account, I'll just take out the postage and send the mrchandise payment over to Part15.us
My closet will get cleaner and our board will get faster: win-win
Heck, if only a few of us sold one $25.00 package of stuff the board would get more than enough to finish the move and have some left over for upgrades
Experimental broadcasting for a better tomorrow!
As of right now, we are ok on paying for the new colo (YAY!!! Thanks!!) - we need the new rails to get the box into the rack, and for that - i'm just waiting for the twice-a-year google check to arrive. Once I have that, I'll run over to www.weirdstuff.com and grab a pair, then hike up to San Francisco and stick the box into the rack...
