One of the greatest tricks of radio performance is when one or two people do multiple character voices so the studio seems full of people.
Many where introduced to the magic of multi-voicing when Bob and Ray did the voices for many many characters who talked to each other and included Bob and Ray in the conversation.
The first time I heard them was Wally Ballou interviewing a snake handler at a zoo, showing off how he could be in the coils of a boa constricter using professional handling to get the snake to let go. Except that the snake kept tightening and all Wally could do was send it back to the studio. I actually believed it and went into shock, but later realized it was a routine.
Gary Owens was a DJ here for awhile and did multiple voices, as did a great local DJ named Mort Crowley.
Mort mimicked the local city mayor and had the mayor "stopping by" to "hang around the studio."
The most amazing voice man I've ever found is Phil Hendrie, who can carry on complex conversations among a large cast of characters continuously and in real-time. Watch "Ted Bell Discusses His Miniature Chickens" on the Phil Hendrie Show:
Hi: I like Gary Owens voice,he had a great voice for radio , I liked him in " laugh- in".
That takes me back to a great dj back in upstate,n.y. on waqx, Ed levine great low smooth voice and i asked him how to get a voice like his and all he did was practice,So i tried it and it was working. Then ed mention while he was at the station i work for and was impressed that we had 3 full studios and a tv station for a educational station and the amount of power as well.
What so strange is hearing the announcer for so long, Then seeing them for the first time and saying how there voices don't fit them at times.
station 8
True, Station8, many radio voices don't match their looks.
Two more great voice men I want to mention are Stan Freberg, who died last week, voice actor on many cartoons and comedy records.
Harry Schearer is an amazing comic who does multiple voices on The Simpsons and does his own weekly show with him imitating many famous people in politics.
